In a book symbol slot machine, the book is a double-duty icon: it substitutes as a wild and, when three or more land anywhere, triggers free spins as a scatter. During those spins one randomly chosen symbol expands to fill whole reels. This page explains each job, works through the expanding-symbol maths and compares the best-known book slots.
In classic book slots the book is both wild and scatter: it substitutes on lines and triggers free spins.
Three or more books usually start the free spins, with one symbol chosen to expand during them.
An expanding symbol can pay on every line at once, even on reels that are not next to each other in some games.
Book of Ra Deluxe (Novomatic, 2008) and Book of Dead (Play’n GO) are the best-known examples; both have a 5,000× published max win.
The book format is usually high or very high volatility, so long gaps between features are normal.

What the book symbol does in a slot machine
A book symbol combines two special roles. In the base game it acts as a wild, standing in for other symbols to complete paylines. It is also a scatter: land three or more anywhere in view and the game awards free spins, plus a scatter payment on many games. A few book slots also pay the book on its own as a high-value symbol.
The format is so recognisable that it has become a category of its own. Our guide to book slot machines covers the type as a whole; this page focuses on the symbol and the expanding feature it opens. The slot machine symbols hub places it alongside the older traditional icons.

How the expanding symbol works in a book symbol slot machine
The feature that made book slots famous is the expanding symbol. When free spins start, the game picks one ordinary paying symbol at random. For the rest of the feature, whenever that symbol lands on enough reels to form a win, it grows to cover each of those reels completely and then pays.
Three or more books land anywhere and trigger the free spins.
The game reveals one randomly chosen special symbol for the feature.
Each free spin plays out normally, with ordinary line wins paid first.
If the special symbol appears on enough reels for a win, it expands to fill those reels.
The expanded symbols are then paid across all active lines.
Three or more books during the feature can add more free spins.
In Book of Dead and similar games, the expanded symbol pays on all ten lines even when the reels it covers are not next to each other, so a special symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5 can still pay as three of a kind. That is the source of the format’s big wins, and it is why the choice of special symbol matters so much: a premium symbol expanding across five reels pays far more than a royal.
Worked example: an expanding symbol at a 20p stake
These pays are invented to show the method. Imagine a 10-line, 5×3 book slot played at 20p a spin, so 2p a line, and a special symbol that pays 10× the line bet for three of a kind, 100× for four and 1,000× for five.

Five full reels in this example pays 1,000 times the 20p stake. Real games cap the total: Book of Ra Deluxe and Book of Dead both publish a maximum win of 5,000 times the stake, which would be £1,000 at 20p, £10,000 at £2 and £25,000 at £5, the two online limits set out in the Gambling Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) for players aged 18 to 24 and 25 and over. Those outcomes are extremely rare; our max win caps guide explains how caps are applied.

The figures below are published specifications. RTP can vary by casino where a game is supplied in more than one version, so always check the help screen.
The book format is closely tied to Novomatic, the Austrian company founded by Johann Graf in 1980, according to Wikipedia’s Novomatic article (opens in a new tab). Book of Ra Deluxe is dated to 2008 in published game data. We have not found a reliable source for the release year of the original Book of Ra, so we do not give one here. Novomatic took a controlling stake in the London online studio Greentube in 2010, which brought its games online.
Play’n GO’s Book of Dead then made the format a staple of UK online casinos, and many studios followed with their own book games, often on Egyptian themes. Our Egyptian symbols page and the wider history of online slots put this in context.
Why book slots are so volatile
A book slot concentrates much of its return in the free spins, and much of the free spins’ value in one rare outcome: a premium symbol expanding across four or five reels. The base game, with its 10 lines, returns relatively little in between. That is the recipe for high volatility.
Advantages
Simple rules that are easy to follow
Free spins can pay large multiples when a premium symbol expands
Wide choice of themes and versions
Drawbacks
Long gaps between features are normal
A low-paying special symbol can make free spins disappointing
UK versions of book slots follow the same online rules as every other slot. Since 31 October 2021 there has been no autoplay, a minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin and no slam-stop, and games must not celebrate returns that are no bigger than the stake. Slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos do not offer a feature buy, so the only way to reach the free spins is to land the books. The full wording is in the Gambling Commission’s responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab).
Older book games often included a gamble feature after wins; whether a UK version offers one depends on the game and the casino, so check the help screen. The hi-lo gamble page explains how such features affect your return.

Frequently asked questions
What does the book symbol do in slots?
In classic book slots the book is both a wild and a scatter. As a wild it substitutes for other symbols to complete paylines, and as a scatter three or more anywhere trigger free spins, often with a small scatter payment. At the start of the free spins one paying symbol is chosen to expand during the feature. Rules vary in newer games, so read the help screen. The type as a whole is covered in book slot machines.
How many free spins do book slots give?
Ten free spins for three or more books is the most common rule, used by games such as Book of Dead, with the chance to retrigger by landing three or more books again during the feature. Some newer book slots vary the number or add extra features, so the count is not universal. The help screen states the exact rule for each game. Our explainer on how free spins work on slot machines covers retriggers and feature limits.
How does the expanding symbol pay?
When the randomly chosen special symbol lands on enough reels for a win during free spins, it expands to fill each of those reels and then pays across all active lines. In Book of Dead and similar games it pays even if the covered reels are not adjacent. On a 10-line game at 2p a line, a symbol paying 10 times the line bet for three of a kind returns £2 when it covers three reels. Our page on expanding symbols explains the variations.
Which symbol is best to expand?
The highest-paying symbol in the game, usually the main character or a premium icon, gives the biggest wins when it expands, especially across four or five reels. Royals expand more often but pay much less. You cannot choose the symbol: it is picked at random when the free spins start, and the game’s RTP already accounts for every possible choice. Our page on card royals explains why low-pay symbols return so little.
What is the maximum win on Book of Dead?
Book of Dead’s published maximum win is 5,000 times the stake. At 20p that is £1,000; at £2, the online limit for players aged 18 to 24, it is £10,000; and at £5, the limit for players aged 25 and over, it is £25,000. A win of that size needs the premium symbol to expand across the reels during free spins and is extremely rare. Our full Book of Dead page covers its RTP of 96.21% and how the game works.
Is Book of Ra the same as Book of Dead?
No: they are separate games from different developers that share the same core idea. Book of Ra Deluxe is by Novomatic, dated 2008 in published game data, with an RTP of 95.1% (a 94.26% version also exists) and very high volatility. Book of Dead is by Play’n GO, with an RTP of 96.21% and high volatility. Both are 5×3, 10-line games with a published 5,000× maximum win. Our Book of Ra Deluxe page compares the details.
Why do book slots go so long without a feature?
Because the format puts much of its return into the free spins and makes them relatively rare, which is what high volatility means. Long runs without three books are a normal part of the maths, not a sign that a game is broken or ‘cold’, and no feature ever becomes due. Set a budget that allows for this before you start. Our guide on how long £100 lasts on slots shows how volatility affects session length.
Can I buy the free spins on a book slot in the UK?
No: slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos do not offer a feature buy, so the free spins can only be reached by landing three or more books during normal play. This is how games are supplied to Great Britain rather than a dated rule. Other UK design rules also apply, including the 2.5-second minimum spin time and no autoplay. The UK slot machine rules page sets out every rule that shapes online slots in Britain.
Do different casinos run different RTPs on book slots?
Sometimes, yes. Some book slots are supplied in more than one RTP version, for example Book of Ra Deluxe at 95.1% or 94.26% and Book of Shadows with a stated default of 96.01%. The version a casino uses should be shown in the game’s help screen, so check it before you play. You cannot tell the version from how the game plays. Our page on slot RTP variants explains why studios offer different versions.
Can I play book slots for free?
Demo versions exist for most book slots, though in Britain the casino has to check your age before letting you play them. Because book games are so volatile, a demo is a useful reality check: a few hundred spins often show how rarely three books arrive and how much the expanding symbol choice changes the payout. Demo rules require the same behaviour as the real game. If you go on to play for money, our bankroll guide helps you size a session.
