The Legacy of Dead slot is a Play'n GO Egyptian game on five reels and ten lines with a 96.58% RTP, high volatility and a 5,000× stake cap. Its free spins start with one expanding symbol and add another with each retrigger, up to nine. This page explains exactly how that works, what it costs and how the UK version differs.
Five reels, three rows and ten fixed lines, with one symbol that acts as both wild and scatter.
Free spins begin with one random expanding symbol; every retrigger adds another, to a maximum of nine.
The 96.58% top-version RTP means an average cost of about 3.4p per £1 staked, but lower settings exist.
The 5,000× cap is £10,000 at the £2 limit for 18–24s and £25,000 at £5 for over-25s.

Legacy of Dead slot at a glance
Legacy of Dead comes from Play'n GO, the Swedish studio behind Book of Dead. Both games use a five-reel, three-row grid, ten paylines, an Egyptian tomb theme and free spins built around a symbol that expands to fill whole reels. The difference is in what happens when the free spins keep going: Legacy of Dead adds a new expanding symbol every time the round is retriggered.
The game's random number generator decides each result when you press spin; the reels then display it. Your stake is spread across ten fixed lines, so a £1 spin is ten line bets of 10p each.
Choose your total stake. All ten lines are played on every spin.
Press spin. The RNG picks where each reel strip stops.
The game checks each line for three or more matching symbols from the left (two for the higher symbols, where the paytable says so).
The combined wild and scatter symbol substitutes on lines and also pays anywhere on its own.
Three or more of those symbols anywhere on the reels start the free spins.
The result is added to your balance, and the next spin can't start until at least 2.5 seconds after this one began.
Payline wins are calculated per line and multiplied by your line bet. If the paytable shows a five-of-a-kind king at 500× the line bet, at 10p per line that is £50. The help screen shows every value in pounds for the stake you have set.
Legacy of Dead symbols and paytable
The low end of the paytable is the card royals from 10 to A. The higher symbols are Egyptian figures: published guides list Horus and Tutankhamen, Anubis, and a pharaoh-style king at the top. A single golden altar acts as both the wild and the scatter.

Legacy of Dead free spins and expanding symbols
Three or more altar symbols start the free spins. Before the first spin, one paying symbol is chosen at random to become a special expanding symbol for the rest of the round. The help screen states how many spins you receive; check it, as published guides give different figures.
What an expanding symbol does
After the normal line wins on a free spin are paid, the game looks for the special symbol. If it appears on enough reels to form a win, it grows to fill each of those reels from top to bottom and then pays on all ten lines, even if the reels it sits on are not next to each other. That is the core of the expanding symbols mechanic.
How the round grows
Landing three more altars during the free spins retriggers the round. Each retrigger adds more spins and picks another expanding symbol, so the number of special symbols can climb from one to nine. Once every eligible symbol is expanding, further retriggers add spins only. A long round with several expanding symbols can pay out on more than one symbol on the same spin, which is why the later stages tend to carry the larger results.

Worked example: one expanding spin on Legacy of Dead
The values here are illustrative only, to show the method; use the paytable in your game for real figures. Suppose you are playing at £1 a spin (10p a line) and the special symbol is Anubis. On one free spin Anubis appears on reels 1, 3 and 4.
Ordinary line wins are paid first, as on any spin.
Anubis expands to fill reels 1, 3 and 4 completely.
Because expanded symbols pay on every line regardless of gaps, each of the ten lines now holds three Anubis symbols.
If three Anubis pay 20× the line bet in your version, each line pays £2, so the expansion adds £20.
If a second special symbol is active and also lands on three reels, it is expanded and paid separately on the same spin.
Filling all five reels with the top king symbol across ten lines produces the 5,000× maximum, which is why the cap is so closely tied to the free spins.
Legacy of Dead RTP and volatility
The published top RTP is 96.58%, meaning £96.58 returned per £100 staked over the long run and a 3.42% house edge. Play'n GO supplies several lower settings to casinos, and some of these are much lower. The Gambling Commission's technical standard on rules, game descriptions and the likelihood of winning (opens in a new tab) requires games to give players information on their return, so the version loaded should always be shown in the help screen.
Volatility is high. The base game pays relatively little; the free spins, and especially a round with several expanding symbols, carry most of the value. Plenty of rounds pay modestly, and a long dry run is normal rather than a warning sign.

The stake limits come from the Gambling Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab): £5 from 9 April 2025 and £2 for 18–24s from 21 May 2025. No public figure for the chance of hitting the cap is confirmed by the developer, so treat it as an exceptional outcome.
How UK rules shape the Legacy of Dead slot
No autoplay and no turbo: every spin is started by hand and lasts at least 2.5 seconds (since 31 October 2021).
No celebration of a return that is equal to or less than your stake, so a 10p return on a £1 spin is shown quietly.
No bonus buy: entry to the free spins is by scatters only.
Some versions of the game include a gamble option after a win; if your casino's version shows one, it is a separate double-or-nothing choice that raises risk without improving the RTP.
Free demo play, after age verification, is available at many UK casinos; the age check has been required before play-for-fun games since May 2019. Use a demo to see how the expanding symbols look, then check the real-money RTP before staking:
Open the game and tap the menu or information icon.
Go to the rules or paytable pages and scroll to the section on theoretical return.
Compare the number with 96.58%. A noticeably lower figure means a lower setting.
If the figure isn't shown, ask the casino's support team.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Legacy of Dead?
The top RTP of Legacy of Dead is 96.58%, which equals an average return of £96.58 for every £100 staked across millions of spins. Play'n GO also supplies lower settings to casinos, so the version you play may return less. The figure loaded at your casino appears in the game's help or rules screen. A lower setting costs you more on average over time without changing anything you can see on the reels. Our page on what a good RTP for a slot is explains how to judge the number.
What is the Legacy of Dead max win?
The Legacy of Dead max win is 5,000 times your stake. In pounds that is £500 at 10p, £5,000 at £1, £10,000 at the £2 limit that applies to 18 to 24 year olds and £25,000 at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over. The figure is reached by filling the screen with the top king symbol, most realistically as an expanding symbol in free spins. It is a rare outcome and no confirmed odds are published. See what the odds of winning a slot machine jackpot are for context.
How do Legacy of Dead free spins work?
Legacy of Dead free spins start when three or more altar symbols land anywhere on the reels. One paying symbol is chosen at random to expand during the round, filling whole reels and paying on all ten lines whenever it can form a win. Each retrigger adds more spins and another expanding symbol, up to nine in total. Once all are active, retriggers add spins only. The help screen gives the exact number of spins for your version. Our expanding symbols page explains the mechanic in more detail.
What is the difference between Legacy of Dead and Book of Dead?
The main difference is in the free spins. Book of Dead picks one expanding symbol for the whole round, while Legacy of Dead starts with one and adds another on every retrigger, up to nine. Both are high-volatility Play'n GO games on five reels and ten lines with a 5,000× cap. Legacy of Dead also lists a higher top RTP, 96.58% against 96.21%, so its long-run average cost is a little lower. Book of Dead uses a book as its wild and scatter; Legacy of Dead uses an altar. See our Book of Dead page.
Can I play Legacy of Dead in demo mode?
Yes, many UK casinos offer free demo play of Legacy of Dead, after age verification. UK operators have been required since May 2019 to check that you are 18 or over before you play any free-to-play version of a gambling game. The demo uses the same rules and features with play credits. It is a good way to understand the expanding symbol and retriggers, but a short demo session can't reveal the true return. Our guide to free slot machines explains how demo play works in the UK.
Does Legacy of Dead have a gamble feature in the UK?
It depends on the version your casino runs. Some versions of Legacy of Dead show a gamble option after a win, letting you risk the win on a guess, such as the colour or suit of a card, to double or multiply it. If it appears, it is optional and you can always collect instead. Gambling a win does not improve your long-run return and increases how quickly a session can swing. Check the help screen to see whether it is enabled. Our page on the hi-lo gamble feature explains how these options work.
Is Legacy of Dead high volatility?
Yes, Legacy of Dead is rated high volatility. Much of its return is concentrated in free spins, especially rounds that retrigger and add several expanding symbols, so the base game often pays little. That means a budget can fall steadily for a long time and then jump after one strong feature, or not jump at all. Volatility doesn't change the RTP; it describes how bumpy the ride is. If you prefer smoother play, look at our list of low volatility slot machines instead.
What is the maximum stake on Legacy of Dead in the UK?
The maximum stake on Legacy of Dead in the UK is £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 per spin for players aged 18 to 24. These limits cover every online slot and came into force on 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025. The game may support higher stakes elsewhere, but UK casinos must cap them. At the £5 limit, the 5,000× maximum win is £25,000. Read more on our stake limit for 18 to 24 year olds page, which explains how casinos apply the lower cap.
Can you predict which symbol will expand in Legacy of Dead?
No, the expanding symbol is chosen at random at the start of the free spins and on each retrigger. Nothing you do, including your stake, the time you play or how quickly you start the round, changes which symbol is picked. The higher symbols pay more when they expand but are no more or less likely to be chosen because of anything you can control. Any guide that claims otherwise is wrong. Our page on how slot machines decide who wins explains the role of the random number generator.
Why do Legacy of Dead wins sometimes not celebrate?
A win that returns your stake or less is not celebrated because UK rules prohibit it. Since 31 October 2021 online slots in Great Britain can't play win sounds or animations when the amount returned is equal to or less than the stake, because doing so made losses look like wins. So if you bet £1 and get 60p back, the game shows the amount quietly and your net position falls. This applies to every UK slot, not only Legacy of Dead. Our explainer on why a slot win did not celebrate covers it.
