Mayan Stackways slot

The Mayan Stackways slot is a 2023 Hacksaw Gaming game on a 5-reel, 4-row grid that pays 1,024 ways, then adds more whenever its StackWays symbol stacks 2–10 matching symbols onto a reel. The top published RTP is 96.23%, with lower settings in circulation. Below: how the stacking maths works, what each spin costs and what the UK version leaves out.

Key takeaways

  • Base grid: 5 reels × 4 rows = 1,024 ways (4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4).
  • The StackWays symbol stacks 2–10 matching symbols on a reel, which lengthens that reel and multiplies the ways.
  • Best published RTP is 96.23%, but lower versions exist: check the help screen at your casino.
  • No max win or volatility figure is confirmed in our checked data, so read both in the game rules.
  • UK play means no bonus buy, no autoplay and spins of at least 2.5 seconds.

What the Mayan Stackways slot is

Mayan Stackways comes from Hacksaw Gaming, the Malta-based studio behind Wanted Dead or a Wild, and it arrived in 2023. The theme is a jungle temple, but the reason people search for it is the mechanic in its name. Rather than adding rows across the whole grid, as a Megaways game does, it stretches individual reels by dropping a tall stack of one symbol into them.

That makes it an unusual hybrid. Most of the time it plays like a standard 1024 ways slot, with three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left paying in any row. When a StackWays symbol appears, the reel it sits on suddenly holds many more positions, and the ways count jumps with it.

How StackWays works, with the ways maths

Ways games count wins by multiplying the number of symbol positions on each reel. Four positions on each of five reels gives 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 1,024 routes from reel 1 to reel 5. Change any one of those numbers and the total changes in proportion. Our explainer on ways-to-win slot machines sets out the method.

StackWays changes those numbers mid-spin. When the special symbol lands, it becomes a stack of between 2 and 10 matching symbols on that reel. The reel is treated as taller than four positions, so it contributes more ways. It works rather like a stacked symbol, except the stack adds height instead of simply filling existing rows.

A simplified worked example

The game’s exact counting rules are in its help screen; the arithmetic below simply shows why stacking matters. Imagine reel 2 normally shows 4 positions. If a stack lifts it to 8 positions, the grid becomes 4 × 8 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 2,048 ways, double the base. If a second reel is lifted to 8 as well, the count becomes 4 × 8 × 8 × 4 × 4 = 4,096. Stack several reels and the total climbs very quickly.

How taller reels multiply ways (illustrative)
Positions per reel (1–5)WaysChange from base
4, 4, 4, 4, 41,024Base grid
4, 8, 4, 4, 42,048× 2
4, 8, 8, 4, 44,096× 4
4, 8, 8, 8, 48,192× 8
4, 13, 4, 4, 43,328× 3.25

The win from a stacked reel also grows because the stack is one symbol. If reel 3 holds a stack of 10 matching symbols and reels 1 and 2 each show that symbol once, a three-of-a-kind is paid on 1 × 1 × 10 = 10 ways at once. That is the key to the game: the payout comes less from rare symbols and more from many ways paying the same combination together.

Playing a spin on the Mayan Stackways slot machine

  1. Set the total bet. UK casinos cap it at £2 a spin for players aged 18–24 and £5 for those aged 25 and over.
  2. Press spin. The random number generator settles every reel stop and any StackWays outcome straight away.
  3. Watch the reels for at least 2.5 seconds; UK slots can’t run faster.
  4. If a StackWays symbol has landed, the stack expands and the ways are recounted.
  5. All left-to-right ways wins are paid, and scatter counts are checked for the bonus rounds.
  6. Your balance and net position update on screen.

Nothing you do between pressing spin and the result appearing has any effect. Online, stopping the reels early changes nothing, and UK versions don’t offer a slam-stop button anyway. See can you stop a slot spin early for why.

Mayan Stackways free spins and bonus rounds

Published game descriptions list two scatter-triggered bonuses. The free spins round, described as Stack Spins, makes StackWays symbols appear more often and can switch on reels so that they keep landing stacks for the rest of the round. A larger scatter count leads instead to a coin-collecting bonus, described as Mayan Gold, in which reels build up coin values that are banked and paid at the end.

Scatter counts, the number of free spins, retrigger rules and coin values are all set out in the help screen of the version you open. Because those details can differ in how they are presented between casinos, read them there rather than relying on any summary, including this one. The general mechanics of a scatter trigger are covered on our page about what triggers a bonus round.

No bonus trigger rate is confirmed in our checked data. Any figure you see quoted elsewhere describes a long-run average, not a schedule, and a bonus can take far longer than average to appear.

Mayan Stackways RTP and why the version matters

The best published Mayan Stackways RTP is 96.23%. Hacksaw, like many studios, supplies lower settings too, and a casino chooses which one to run. Each setting has been tested, so a lower one isn’t rigged, but it costs more over the long run. Our page on slot RTP variants explains how studios supply them.

Mayan Stackways average cost per 100 spins at 96.23% RTP
StakeTotal stakedAverage returnAverage cost
10p£10£9.62£0.38
20p£20£19.25£0.75
£1£100£96.23£3.77
£2£200£192.46£7.54
£5£500£481.15£18.85

Compare that with a hypothetical lower setting of 94%: at £1 a spin, 100 spins would cost about £6 on average rather than £3.77. Over 1,000 spins at £1, the gap grows to roughly £22. That is why checking the RTP line matters more for a regular player than for someone trying the game once. Our guide on where to find RTP on UK slots shows where casinos list it.

Bear in mind that every one of these numbers is an average over an enormous number of spins. A single session of 100 spins can end with most of the stake gone or with a profit, depending on whether a StackWays stack or bonus lands.

Mayan Stackways max win and volatility: what to check

Our checked data doesn’t include a confirmed Mayan Stackways max win or volatility rating, so this page doesn’t state either. Both appear in the game’s rules: the max win is usually written as a multiple of the stake, and Hacksaw shows a volatility rating in its game information.

Once you have the multiple, converting it to pounds is simple. Multiply the cap by your stake: a cap of X times the stake is worth X × £2 at the 18–24 limit and X × £5 at the 25+ limit. Our page on max win caps explains what happens when a feature reaches it.

Converting a max win multiple into pounds

£1Cap × £1£1,000

The 1,000× figure in that table is a round number for illustration only, not the game’s cap. For a feel of what different volatility levels mean for a budget, see our volatility explainer.

What the UK version of Mayan Stackways leaves out

Outside Great Britain, Hacksaw games commonly offer paid ways into features. Slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos don’t include a bonus buy, so in the UK the bonuses are reached only through normal spins. Our page on bonus buy in the UK covers this.

The game design rules the Gambling Commission brought in on 31 October 2021 also apply: no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no celebration of a return equal to or below the stake, and a constant display of your balance and net position. The wording is in the Commission’s summary of changes to the technical standards (opens in a new tab), and our UK slot game design rules page explains each one.

Stake caps come from the casino side. Players aged 25 and over can stake up to £5 a spin (since 9 April 2025), and 18–24s up to £2 (since 21 May 2025), as set out in the Gambling Commission’s stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). The £2 limit for 18 to 24s has its own page.

Mayan Stackways demo and help screen checks

A Mayan Stackways demo, where a UK casino provides one, is free demo play after age verification. Since May 2019, operators have had to check you are 18 or over before any free-to-play slot opens. The demo runs the same maths as the real-money game, which makes it a useful place to read the rules in full.

  1. Find the RTP line and note the percentage; 96.23% is the best published setting.
  2. Read the StackWays section for how stacks form and how ways are counted.
  3. Note the scatter counts for each bonus and the number of free spins.
  4. Find the maximum win statement and convert it at your stake.
  5. Look for the volatility rating in the game information.

Our demo slots guide explains how UK demo play works, and are free slot games the same as real ones answers the common worry about demo maths.

Stacking myths and facts

  • Myth: a run of spins without a stack means one is coming. Fact: every spin is independent, so a dry run changes nothing.
  • Myth: more ways means a higher RTP. Fact: the ways count changes how wins are spread, not the long-run return, which stays at the stated percentage.
  • Myth: a lower RTP version is rigged. Fact: it is a tested, legitimate setting that simply costs more over time.
  • Myth: playing at a quiet time of day helps. Fact: online results don’t depend on the clock or on other players.

Our guide to slot machine myths covers the wider list, including near misses and ‘due’ machines.

Mayan Stackways compared with similar Hacksaw slots

The closest comparison in Hacksaw’s own range is Stick ’Em, which uses the same 5 × 4 grid and 1,024 ways. Players who like the stacking idea but want to compare it with other expanding-grid systems can look at Megaways slot machines, where every reel changes height on every spin, or Nolimit City’s xWays, which expands individual symbols.

Who the Mayan Stackways slot suits

Advantages

  • A clear, visible mechanic: you can see why a win pays on many ways
  • Strong published RTP of 96.23% at the top setting
  • Familiar 1,024-ways base game that is easy to follow

Drawbacks

  • Lower RTP versions exist, so the cost depends on the casino
  • Max win and volatility need checking in the game itself
  • No bonus buy in the UK, so the bonuses can take a long time to land

It suits adults who enjoy watching the ways count rise and who are happy to set a firm budget. A £20 budget at 20p a spin is 100 spins, with an average cost at 96.23% of about 75p, but actual results will vary widely. Our bankroll guide shows how to size stakes for a session.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Mayan Stackways?

The best published Mayan Stackways RTP is 96.23%, and lower versions exist. A casino chooses which tested setting to run, so the figure you get depends on where you play. At 96.23%, 100 spins at £1 cost about £3.77 on average, but a single session can be far better or worse. Open the help screen and read the RTP line before staking. The walkthrough on finding a slot’s RTP shows where it appears in most games.

How does the StackWays feature work?

StackWays is a symbol that turns into a stack of 2 to 10 matching symbols on its reel, making that reel taller and multiplying the number of ways to win. The base grid has 1,024 ways because five reels each show four positions. Lift one reel to eight positions and the illustrative count doubles to 2,048; lift two and it reaches 4,096. A tall stack of one symbol also means a single combination can pay on many ways at once. Our stacked symbols feature page compares similar mechanics.

What is the Mayan Stackways max win?

Our checked data doesn’t include a confirmed Mayan Stackways max win, so check the maximum win statement in the game’s help screen. It is normally written as a multiple of the stake. To turn it into pounds, multiply that number by your stake: for example, a cap of X times stake is worth X × £2 at the 18–24 limit and X × £5 at the 25+ limit. Reaching any cap is extremely rare. See the max win glossary entry for how caps are applied.

How do you get free spins on Mayan Stackways?

Free spins are triggered by landing enough scatter symbols on one spin, according to published game descriptions. During the round, StackWays symbols are described as appearing more often, and some reels can be switched on to keep producing stacks. A higher scatter count leads to a separate coin-collecting bonus instead. Exact scatter counts and spin numbers are in the help screen of the version you open. Our explainer on how free spins work on slot machines covers the basics.

Can I play a Mayan Stackways demo in the UK?

Yes, where a UK casino offers one, but only as free demo play after age verification. Since May 2019, operators must confirm you are 18 or over before a free-to-play game opens. The demo runs the same maths as the paid version, so it is a good way to watch StackWays in action and read the full rules without staking money. It can’t predict real-money results. The page on demo slot age verification explains the rule.

Is Mayan Stackways a high volatility slot?

Our checked data doesn’t include a confirmed volatility rating, so this page doesn’t give one; Hacksaw shows its own rating in the game information. What is clear from the mechanic is that much of the value arrives when stacks land on several reels or a bonus triggers, so results can be uneven. Plan for sessions where small wins dominate and the bigger ways counts are rare. Our volatility explainer shows how ratings translate into session swings.

How many ways to win does Mayan Stackways have?

The base game has 1,024 ways to win, from five reels of four positions each (4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4). The count rises whenever StackWays lengthens a reel, because the total is the product of positions on every reel. Three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left pay in any row. That structure matches Hacksaw’s Stick ’Em, which also uses 1,024 ways on a 5 × 4 grid. See the 1024 ways slots page for more on the format.

Can you buy the bonus on Mayan Stackways in the UK?

No. Slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos don’t include a bonus buy, so the free spins and coin bonus can only be reached through ordinary spins at your chosen stake. Reviews written for other markets sometimes list buy options and prices, which don’t apply to UK players. UK versions also have no autoplay and run at least 2.5 seconds per spin. The bonus buy in the UK page explains how games are supplied here.

Who makes Mayan Stackways?

Mayan Stackways is made by Hacksaw Gaming, a studio headquartered in Malta that launched in September 2018. Hacksaw holds a Gambling Commission licence for Great Britain, and its parent company has been listed on Nasdaq Stockholm since 25 June 2025. The studio is best known for Wanted Dead or a Wild and for compact grids with distinctive mechanics such as StackWays. Our Hacksaw Gaming provider page lists more of its games.

Is Mayan Stackways fair to play?

Yes: the version at a UK-licensed casino must use a tested random number generator and pay in line with its stated RTP over the long run. Each spin is independent, so the game isn’t ‘due’ a stack after a quiet run and doesn’t hold back after a win. Fair doesn’t mean profitable, though; the house edge makes losses likely over time. The explainer on how slot machines decide who wins covers what happens inside each spin.
