Seed meaning in slots: the word has two uses. Most often it is the starting value fed into a slot’s random number generator, which then produces a stream of numbers used to pick reel stops. On jackpot games, ‘seed’ also means the minimum starting amount a progressive prize resets to after it’s won.
An RNG seed is the starting value for the algorithm that produces a slot’s random numbers.
Certified generators are seeded and reseeded from unpredictable sources, so players can’t work out results.
A jackpot seed is a different thing: the amount a progressive restarts from after a win.
Knowing about seeds gives no edge; every spin remains independent and random.

What seed means in slots
Computers can’t produce true chance on their own, so most slot software uses a pseudo-random number generator: an algorithm that turns one number into the next in a way that looks random and passes statistical tests. The seed is the value the algorithm starts from. Feed in the same seed and you get the same sequence; change the seed and the sequence changes completely. Our random number generator explainer covers the whole system.
The second meaning belongs to jackpots. When a progressive prize is won, it doesn’t drop to zero; it restarts from a set amount, called the seed, and grows again from contributions. That use has its own entry, jackpot seed, and is touched on below.
Seed meaning in slots: a toy example of how seeding works
Real generators are huge and secret, but a tiny one shows the idea. Take the rule ‘multiply by 5, add 3, keep the remainder after dividing by 16’. Start it with two different seeds:

If a reel strip had 16 stops numbered 0 to 15, each output could pick a stop. Two lessons follow. First, the same seed always gives the same stream, which is why the seed must be secret and unpredictable. Second, this toy generator only has 16 possible values, so seed 8 simply joins seed 7’s cycle part-way through (its first output, 11, is seed 7’s fourth). Real generators have cycles so long they never repeat in practice, and they are reseeded from unpredictable sources.
The toy rule is for illustration only. No licensed game uses anything so simple.
How seeding works in real slot machines
When the game server or machine starts, the generator is seeded from an unpredictable source, such as hardware noise or timing data.
The generator keeps producing numbers continuously, whether anyone is playing or not.
When you press spin, the game takes the next numbers in the stream and maps them to a reel stop for each reel.
The result is decided at that moment; the animation that follows just shows it.
Many systems reseed or mix in fresh unpredictable data from time to time, so the stream can’t be reconstructed.
Online, this happens on the game provider’s server rather than on your phone; see online slot servers. On land-based machines it happens inside the cabinet or on a central server. The mapping from number to stop is what virtual reels describe: Inge Telnaes’s 1984 US patent covered using a random number generator to select reel stops, according to the Wikipedia history of the slot machine (opens in a new tab).
Land-based machines have their own Gaming Machine Technical Standards, with new versions due to apply from 2027; see gaming machine technical standards.
Seed as the starting value of a progressive jackpot
On a progressive jackpot game, a slice of every stake flows into the prize pool. When it is won, the operator or network resets the jackpot to its seed and it starts growing again. The seed is usually funded from the same contributions, which is part of why jackpot games often have a lower base-game return. See how jackpots are funded for the money flow and linked progressives for network jackpots.
RNG seed myths: what a seed can’t tell you
Myth: machines ‘reset’ at a set time, so timing matters. The stream runs constantly and your spin lands on whatever number is current; see best time to play slot machines.
Myth: a seed creates hot and cold patterns. Certified output shows no exploitable pattern; read do slot machines have patterns.
Myth: knowing the seed would let you beat the game. Seeds are secret and refreshed; attempts to exploit them are fraud, not skill. See can slot machines be hacked.
Fact: every spin is independent. A loss doesn’t make a win more likely next time; see the gambler’s fallacy.
Where to play RNG-certified slots
Every slot offered by a UK-licensed casino runs on a tested generator, so seeding works the same way whichever site you choose. For new sign-ups, Coral Casino offers players aged 18+ 100 free spins after depositing and betting £10 on slots; the spins are 10p each on selected games, have to be accepted within 48 hours and used within 7 days, and pay winnings without wagering, though e-wallet and prepaid deposits don’t count. Ladbrokes Casino’s new-customer offer (18+) is 50 no-wagering 10p spins a day for 10 days, up to 500, after a £10 slots spend, claimed by 23:59 each day. Both belong to Entain, so check the terms on holding accounts at both.
Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (Entain). If you already hold an account with one Entain brand, you may not be able to open a new account with another; check the terms before signing up.
Significant terms: 18+. New players only. Offer runs 01/10/2026 to 01/02/2027. Deposit (certain types excluded) and bet £10+ on slot games to get 100 free spins (selected games, £0.10 each, 48 hrs to accept, valid 7 days). No wagering on free spin winnings. Frequently asked questions
What is a seed in a slot machine?
It is the starting value given to the pseudo-random number generator that produces a slot’s results. From that seed the algorithm generates a long stream of numbers, and each spin uses the current numbers to choose where every reel stops. Licensed generators are seeded from unpredictable sources so the stream can’t be worked out. The word is also used for the reset value of a progressive jackpot. See the random number generator explainer and the glossary.
Can you predict a slot if you know the seed?
In theory a simple generator with a known seed is predictable, which is exactly why licensed games keep seeds secret, use very large generators and mix in fresh unpredictable data. Players never see seeds or the stream, and attempting to exploit one would be fraud rather than a strategy. For a normal player, every spin is unpredictable and independent. Read can slot machines be hacked and are slot machines rigged.
Does the seed change when I start a new session?
Not because of you. The generator runs continuously on the server or machine and doesn’t restart for each player, session or login. Your spin simply takes whatever numbers are current at the moment you press the button. Changing the time you play, the device you use or how fast you spin doesn’t change the odds. See does the speed of spinning matter and how slot machines decide who wins.
What is a jackpot seed?
A jackpot seed is the amount a progressive jackpot restarts from after someone wins it. Instead of dropping to zero, the prize resets to the seed and then grows again from a small slice of each stake. The seed is usually paid for out of those same contributions. It has nothing to do with the RNG seed except the name. Our jackpot seed entry and what happens when a slot jackpot is won explain it.
Who checks that slot RNGs are seeded properly?
Independent test houses approved by the Gambling Commission examine the generator, including how it is seeded and whether its output passes randomness tests, before games are offered in Great Britain. The Commission’s technical standards require outcomes that can’t be predicted or influenced. Land-based machines are tested against separate gaming machine standards. See RNG certification and how machines are tested for the process step by step.
Do online slots and pub machines use seeds the same way?
Both use generators that need a starting value, but where they run differs. Online slots run on the provider’s remote servers, while pub and arcade machines run their software in the cabinet or from a site server. UK fruit machines may also follow a compensated payout design, which affects pacing but not your ability to predict a result. See online vs land-based slots and compensated machines.
