Spin meaning in slots: a spin is one complete game on a slot machine, from the moment you stake and press start until the reels stop and any win is paid. Each spin is a separate random event, and in Great Britain an online slot spin must last at least 2.5 seconds and be started by you.
A spin is one full game: stake, random result, reels stop, win paid.
Every spin is independent; past spins do not affect the next one.
UK online slots: at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop.
At 2.5 seconds a spin, an hour can hold up to 1,440 spins, so stake size adds up fast.

Spin meaning in slots: a clear definition
A spin is a single round of a slot game. You stake an amount, the game draws a random result, the reels animate and stop, and the result is paid or lost. Then the next spin starts from scratch. The word comes from the reels themselves, which visibly spin; regulators use the more formal phrase game cycle, which includes any feature the spin triggers before you can stake again.
You will see the word combined with many others: free spins, respins, bonus spins, dead spins and reel spin. Each describes a variation on the same unit. This entry belongs to our glossary of slot machine words.
What happens inside one slot spin
You confirm the stake. The total bet leaves your balance.
The game works out any wins, triggers and features from that result.
The reels animate and stop on the chosen positions, a process that must take at least 2.5 seconds on UK online slots.
Wins are added to your balance, and features such as free spins play out as part of the same game cycle.
The order matters. The result exists before the animation finishes, so how long you watch, when you press the button and whether you look away have no effect. That is also why the old idea of a machine being ‘due’ fails: each spin draws fresh numbers, and slot machines do not remember past spins.

In-game free spins and respins are features; Starburst is a well-known example of a game built around a wild-triggered respin. Read what a dead spin is for why most spins return nothing on high-volatility games.
Our pages on the spin speed rule, the autoplay ban, turbo and slam-stop cover each part. Stake limits apply per spin too: £5 for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24.
How much do slot spins cost per hour?
The 2.5-second floor means a maximum of 1,440 spins in an hour of non-stop play. Real play is slower, with pauses and features, but the ceiling shows why spin count matters as much as stake.
On venue machines a spin is often called a game or play. Early machines were started by pulling a lever, which gave the one-armed bandit its name; most now use a button, though some keep a lever for show. Fruit machines may offer holds and nudges between spins, and the next spin can depend on those choices. Many fruit machines are compensated rather than purely random, and the machine must say which. A pub Category C machine allows up to £1 per game.
There is no fixed number of spins before a bonus. How many spins until a bonus explains why only an average exists.
A long losing run does not make a win more likely; that belief is the gambler's fallacy.
Stopping a spin early online is no longer possible and would not have changed the result anyway.

Frequently asked questions
What does spin mean in slots?
In slots, a spin is one complete game: you stake, the reels turn, they stop on a randomly chosen result and any win is paid. Each spin is independent of every other. On UK online slots, each spin must last at least 2.5 seconds and must be started by pressing the button yourself, as autoplay is banned. Free spins are spins that do not take a new stake, either from a feature or from an offer. Our guide to how to play a slot machine walks through a first spin.
How long does one spin last on UK online slots?
At least 2.5 seconds for an online slot at a UK-licensed casino, measured from the start of one game cycle until the next can begin. The rule has applied since 31 October 2021, and turbo or quick-spin modes that shorten it are not allowed. Many games take a little longer than the minimum. Land-based machines follow separate technical standards. See how long a slot spin is in the UK for more.
Is every slot spin random?
Yes, on online slots and most modern casino machines, every spin's result is produced by a certified random number generator, independently of previous spins. The odds of each outcome are the same on every spin. Some British fruit machines are compensated instead, meaning past play can influence what the machine offers, and they must say so on the machine. Random does not mean even: the RTP still gives the house an edge. Read are slot machines rigged for how fairness is tested.
What is the difference between a spin and a respin?
A spin is a full game that costs a stake, while a respin is an extra turn of some reels, usually without a new stake, triggered by a feature. During a respin some reels or symbols are held and the others turn again. Respins are counted as part of the original game cycle. Hold and win games use repeated respins as their main feature. Our respins feature page explains the common designs.
Can I use autoplay on UK slots?
No. Autoplay has been banned on online slots at UK-licensed casinos since 31 October 2021, and the ban was extended to other online casino games from 17 January 2025. Each spin has to be started with its own click or tap. The rule aims to keep players aware of each stake. If you see an autoplay button, you are probably on a site not licensed in Great Britain, which offers fewer protections. The autoplay ban page gives the background.
Do free spins use the same odds as paid spins?
Offer free spins at a fixed value use the game's normal maths, so the odds per spin match paid spins at that stake. Feature free spins inside a game are different: they usually run on special reels with more wilds or multipliers, and their value is built into the game's overall RTP. Neither kind makes the next paid spin more likely to win. Our page on how free spins work compares both types.
How many spins can I play per hour?
On a UK online slot, no more than 1,440 spins an hour, because each must last at least 2.5 seconds. Most people play fewer, with pauses and features in between. At £1 a spin, 1,440 spins means £1,440 staked and an average cost of about £57.60 at 96% RTP, though actual results vary widely. Reality checks and time-outs can help you keep track. Our page on reality checks on slots explains these reminders.
