The session meaning in slots is the stretch of continuous play from the moment you start a game, or log in, to the moment you stop. It is the unit UK rules use for showing you elapsed time and your net position, and the most practical unit for setting a budget, because results over one session can swing a long way from the advertised RTP.
A session is one continuous period of play, usually from opening a game to closing it or logging out.
UK online slots must show elapsed session time and your net position while you play.
Reality checks pop up at a frequency you choose and must be acknowledged.
Budget per session, not per spin: short-run results can sit far from the long-run RTP.

What a session means on slot machines
In everyday talk, a slot session is simply "one go": sitting down at a pub machine, or opening a game on your phone, and playing until you stop. Inside a casino account the word is more precise. A session usually begins when you log in or launch a game and ends when you log out, close it or are timed out, and the software tracks the time and money that pass through it.
The session is bigger than a spin and smaller than your overall play history. One spin is one game cycle; a session strings hundreds of them together. That middle scale is where most people actually feel wins and losses, which is why budgets and limits are normally set per session.
What UK online slots must show during a session
The Gambling Commission's time requirements and reality checks standard (opens in a new tab) says elapsed time should be displayed for the whole gaming session, in hours, minutes and seconds. Since 31 October 2021 online slots have also had to show your net position, meaning how much you are up or down since the session began. Our net position rule page explains how that figure is worked out.

A reality check is a message showing the time since the session started. You set how often it appears, you must acknowledge it before it disappears, and the guidance says it should give you the option to leave the game or log out.
Worked example: what a 45-minute session costs
Suppose a 45-minute session at 20p a spin, averaging one spin every 3 seconds once features and pauses are counted. These figures are illustrative.
Total staked: 900 × 20p = £180, although the same pounds are often recycled from wins.
Average cost at 96% RTP: 4% of £180 = £7.20.
Actual result: anywhere from losing the whole session budget to finishing ahead, especially on a volatile game.
The gap between £7.20 and the real outcome is what volatility and standard deviation describe. The average is only the centre of a wide spread, and the theoretical loss entry explains how operators use the same calculation.
How to plan a slot session
Decide the amount you can afford to lose this session and treat it as the cost of entertainment.
Choose a stake small enough for the session to last as long as you want it to.
Set a reality check interval in your account settings before you start.
Set a deposit limit if you have not already; UK sites have prompted new customers to set one before their first deposit since 31 October 2025.
Stop when the time or money runs out, and do not top up to chase losses.
Gaming machines in pubs, arcades and casinos have not had to define or display a session in the way online slots do. That is changing. The Commission's gaming machine technical standards page (opens in a new tab) confirms an interim session standard from 30 March 2027 and the finalised standards from 30 June 2027; trade reports say new Category B machines will then display elapsed time and net position and offer player limit-setting. Machines already installed are exempt. See gaming machine technical standards for the detail as reported.

Frequently asked questions
What does session mean in slots?
A session is a single continuous period of play, typically from logging in or opening a game to logging out or closing it. UK online slots track time and net position across the session and show them on screen, and reality checks are timed from its start. Budgets are usually set per session for the same reason. See our slot session limits guide for how to set one, and how to set a limit on slots for the account tools available.
How long is a slot session?
As long as you choose, as there is no fixed length. Some casinos end a session after a period of inactivity, and reality checks remind you how long you have been playing at the interval you choose. A useful approach is to decide the length in advance, alongside the money you can afford to lose, and stop when either runs out. Our page on how much a slot costs per hour shows how time and stake combine, and how long £100 lasts on slots gives examples.
What is net position in a slot session?
Net position is the difference between what you have won and what you have staked since the session began. If you have staked £50 and won back £38, your net position is minus £12. UK online slots have had to display it since 31 October 2021, so you can see your real result rather than only the size of the last win. Our net position rule explains the requirement, and why did my slot win not celebrate covers the related ban on celebrating losses.
Does a new session reset my luck?
No. Each spin is independent, so closing a game and opening it again does not change your chances. A slot does not remember the previous session or owe you a win. The session only matters for tracking your time and money. If you notice yourself restarting games in the hope of a better run, that is a sign to take a break. Read do slot machines remember past spins and the gambler's fallacy page.
What happens to a session if my connection drops?
The spin in progress is usually completed on the server, and the result is shown when you reconnect, while the session itself may end and restart. UK technical standards include a section on interrupted gambling (RTS 10) covering how unfinished games are handled. Check your account history afterwards to confirm the outcome. Our guide what happens if my connection drops mid-spin explains the process, and what if a slot machine malfunctions covers land-based faults.
Where can I get help if my sessions are getting longer?
Start with the tools in your account: reality checks, deposit limits and time-outs.
