What kind of game the Dead Canary slot is

Dead Canary belongs to Nolimit City’s run of mining-themed games, alongside Fire in the Hole xBomb and Misery Mining. The title refers to the old practice of taking caged canaries underground as an early warning of bad air, and the game plays on that grim idea with a cartoon style aimed squarely at adults. Mechanically it combines three things: a six-reel grid that opens up as you win, exploding wild symbols, and a respin bonus in which the canaries collect prizes.

It is a high-volatility game. Most spins end after a single small win or none, and the larger results come from long cascade chains or the bonus round. If you are new to that style, read our high volatility slot machines page before you set a budget.

How the Dead Canary slot machine grid opens up

The reels start uneven, with tall reels on the left and short ones on the right; the rest of each reel is blocked by barriers. Wins pay as ways from the left with three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels. Each win removes the winning symbols, new ones slide in, and a blocked row opens. A long chain of cascading reels therefore grows the grid as it goes, adding ways with every step.

  1. Choose your stake and press spin; the RNG sets the full outcome at once.
  2. Symbols land on the open positions of the six reels.
  3. Ways wins from reel 1 are paid and the winning symbols are removed.
  4. New symbols slide down, and a blocked row opens, adding ways.
  5. Wilds and special events act during the chain.
  6. Clearing every barrier activates the random multipliers at the bottom of the reels.
  7. When no new win forms, the spin ends; the grid resets for the next paid spin.

This is the same broad idea as expanding reels in other games: the more the grid grows, the more ways a symbol can pay. Our ways to win page explains the arithmetic.

xBomb wilds and Wild Mining

Dead Canary has two wild features, both built around explosions. The xBomb wild substitutes for paying symbols; when it is part of a win it explodes, clearing the symbols around it in a cross shape and adding to the win multiplier for the next cascade. Several xBombs in one chain can stack that multiplier up quickly. The same mechanic gives Fire in the Hole xBomb its name.

Wild Mining is a rescue feature for spins that would otherwise lose. According to the game descriptions, if a non-winning spin shows three or more matching symbols in a diagonal line, those symbols become wilds and wild bombs are added, which then explode and lift the multiplier. It doesn’t change the overall return; it is one of the ways the game delivers the RTP it was designed for. Our wild symbols and multipliers pages cover the general mechanics.

Dead Canary free spins? The Canary Bonus Round explained

Dead Canary doesn’t have a conventional free spins round. Its bonus is the Canary Bonus Round, a hold and win style feature started by three caged canary scatters, in any mix of silver and gold cages. The cages that started it stay in place, each with a canary that has three lives, and you get a set of respins.

On each respin, new symbols can land around the cages. Coins add a value to the cages that collect them. Silver cages collect from neighbouring positions; gold cages collect from a wider area along their reel and row. Other symbols upgrade cages, add lives, apply multipliers or cost a canary its lives. When a canary loses its last life, its value is banked and a fresh canary replaces it. Locked vaults in the corners can be opened by explosions and paid at the end.

Canary Bonus Round symbols, as published descriptions list them
SymbolEffect
CoinAdds a cash value to collecting cages
MultiplierMultiplies cage values
BombExplodes, removes lives from nearby cages and can open vaults
UpgradeTurns a silver cage gold and adds a life
GasRemoves a life from adjacent cages
DwarfAdds a life; the cage then collects other cages’ values each spin
RatAdds a life; the cage then adds its value to other cages each spin

The round ends when the respins run out, and every banked value plus any opened vault is paid. Respin counts, resets and value ranges are listed in the game rules. We don’t quote a trigger rate.

Dead Canary RTP: what the three versions cost

Dead Canary is published with three RTP settings, and the casino chooses which to run. This is common with Nolimit City and other studios, as our RTP variants page explains. The difference is easy to overlook and makes a real gap in cost.

Dead Canary: 100 spins at £1 under each RTP version
RTP versionTotal stakedAverage returnAverage cost
96.02%£100£96.02£3.98
94.12%£100£94.12£5.88
92.11%£100£92.11£7.89

The lowest version costs almost twice as much as the top one over the same play. At the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over, 100 spins average £19.90 at 96.02% and £39.45 at 92.11%. These are long-run averages; a high-volatility game can produce very different results over a few hundred spins. The figure that applies to you is shown in the help screen, which UK licensees must provide under the Gambling Commission’s standard on game information (opens in a new tab).

How to find which Dead Canary RTP a casino runs

  1. Open Dead Canary at the casino, in demo or real-money mode.
  2. Open the menu and choose the rules or game help screen.
  3. Scroll to the section on return to player near the end of the rules.
  4. Match the figure to one of the three versions: 96.02%, 94.12% or 92.11%.
  5. If you play at more than one casino, compare them before choosing where to play.

Dead Canary max win and volatility

Published Dead Canary max win figures aren’t ones we could verify, so this page leaves the number out. The cap for your copy sits in the rules, written as a multiple of the stake, and turning it into pounds is a single multiplication. Whatever the figure, reaching it needs an exceptional bonus round, and the round ends when the cap is hit.

High volatility shapes everything about how the game feels. Expect long stretches where the grid barely opens, broken by occasional long cascades or a bonus. Our slot volatility and budgets guide shows how to size a session for this kind of game.

xBet and stake limits

In some markets Dead Canary offers xBet, an optional extra stake that changes the base game, for example by opening a row from the start and making scatters more frequent. It works like the ante bet in other games: you pay more per spin for a different mix of outcomes, not for a better long-run return. Whether it appears in your version, and what it costs, is shown in the bet menu.

Any extra stake counts towards the UK per-spin limits in the Commission’s stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab): £5 for players aged 25 and over since 9 April 2025, and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds since 21 May 2025.

The Fire in the Hole games use a mine-cart hold-and-win bonus; Dead Canary swaps that for the caged canaries with lives, which gives its bonus a different rhythm. All share exploding wilds and a grid that grows as wins land. More from the studio is on our Nolimit City page.

Dead Canary myths and facts

  • Two canary cages on screen means the third is due. Every spin is independent; the near miss is just a display of what didn’t happen.
  • A grid full of opened rows will carry over to the next spin. It resets when the paid spin ends.
  • The canary with the most lives will pay the most. Values depend on what the cage collects, not how long it survives.
  • The lower versions are rigged. They are published, tested versions of the same game that return less on average; how the studio lowers the return isn’t visible from the reels.

Our guide to slot machine near misses explains why ‘so close’ means nothing.

UK rules and the Dead Canary demo

UK versions follow the design rules in force since 31 October 2021: no autoplay or turbo, at least 2.5 seconds per spin (a full cascade chain counts as one spin), no celebration of returns at or below the stake and a visible net position. The bonus buy options offered elsewhere are not in versions supplied to Great Britain; see bonus buy in the UK. The demo is free to play after age verification and shows the canary round in full.

Is the Dead Canary slot worth playing?

Advantages

  • Inventive bonus round with lives and collecting cages
  • Growing grid and exploding wilds keep spins varied
  • Top version returns 96.02%
  • Easy to check the version through the demo’s help screen

Drawbacks

  • Two lower RTP versions in circulation
  • High volatility: long quiet runs
  • Many bonus symbols to learn
  • Max win not confirmed by a trusted source

It suits players who enjoy hold-and-win rounds and want something less predictable than a standard collect feature, provided they check the RTP first. For another respin-based bonus with collecting symbols, see Money Train 2.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Dead Canary RTP?

Dead Canary has three RTP versions: 96.02%, 94.12% and 92.11%. The casino decides which to run, and the help screen shows the figure for the copy you are playing. The gap matters: over 100 spins at £1 the average cost is about £3.98 on the top version and £7.89 on the lowest. A single session can still differ widely from those averages. A walkthrough of the help screen is in how to find a slot’s RTP.

Does Dead Canary have free spins?

Not in the usual sense. Its bonus is the Canary Bonus Round, a hold-and-win style feature started by three caged canary scatters. Instead of free spins with multipliers, you get a set of respins in which sticky canary cages collect coin values and other effects until their lives run out or the respins end. Full rules are in the game’s help pages. Our page on hold and win explains how this kind of round works across different games.

How does the Canary Bonus Round work?

The cages that triggered the round stay on the grid, each holding a canary with three lives. On each respin, coins, multipliers, bombs, gas and other symbols can land. Cages collect values from the positions around them, silver cages from nearby and gold cages from a wider area. When a canary loses its last life, its value is banked and a new canary takes its place. When the respins end, all banked values and any opened corner vaults are paid. See respins for related mechanics.

What is the Dead Canary max win?

Check the game rules: they give the cap as a multiple of your stake, and the version you are playing is the one that counts. We leave the figure out because we couldn’t verify the published numbers. Whatever the cap, reaching it needs an exceptional bonus round and is extremely rare. When it is reached, the round ends. Our page on max win caps explains how caps are built into slot maths.

What is an xBomb wild in Dead Canary?

An xBomb wild substitutes for paying symbols and, when it forms part of a win, explodes and clears the symbols around it in a cross pattern. Each explosion raises the win multiplier for the next cascade, so several xBombs in one chain can stack up a large multiplier. Scatters aren’t destroyed by the blast. The mechanic is shared with Nolimit City’s other mining games; see our Fire in the Hole xBomb slot page for an earlier example.

Is Dead Canary high volatility?

Yes, Dead Canary is rated high volatility. Many spins return little or nothing, and the larger results are concentrated in long cascade chains and the Canary Bonus Round. That means a modest budget can disappear before the bonus arrives. Plan a session around that pattern, and use deposit limits rather than relying on a feature to recover losses. Our volatility explainer shows how volatility and RTP combine to shape a session.

Can I play the Dead Canary demo for free?

Yes. British casinos have had to verify your age before opening any free-to-play game since May 2019, and once that is done the Dead Canary demo costs nothing. It uses play credits and includes the full Canary Bonus Round, so it is a sensible way to learn the many bonus symbols before staking money. Its help screen also gives a first indication of which RTP version that casino runs. Treat what happens in the demo as practice, not a forecast. Our demo slots guide explains what demos are useful for.

Can I buy the Canary Bonus Round in the UK?

No. Dead Canary is sold with bonus buy options in some markets, including a stronger golden version of the canary round, but versions supplied to players in Great Britain don’t include feature buys. You reach the bonus only by landing the caged canary scatters during normal paid spins, within the £5 and £2 per-spin stake limits. The background is on our bonus buy in the UK page.

Is Dead Canary part of a series?

Dead Canary is one of Nolimit City’s mining-themed slots, alongside Misery Mining and the Fire in the Hole games. It shares their exploding xBomb wilds and growing grid, but replaces the mine-cart bonus with the caged canaries and their lives. It isn’t a direct sequel to any one of them. Our Misery Mining slot page covers another game in the same setting with a different free spins design.

Who makes Dead Canary?

Nolimit City built Dead Canary. The studio’s registered office is in St Julian’s, Malta, Jonas Tegman is one of its co-founders, and since a deal announced in June 2022 it has belonged to Evolution. The studio is known for high-volatility games and its x-branded mechanics, including xBomb, xWays and xNudge. Its games are offered by many UK casinos, often in more than one RTP version. Our Nolimit City provider page lists more of its slots.
