What kind of game the Deadwood slot is

Deadwood comes from Nolimit City, a studio registered in Malta with teams in Sweden, owned by Evolution since a deal announced in June 2022. It is known for gritty themes and very volatile maths. Its developer listing gives a release date of 6 May 2020, and the setting is a frontier mining town with a gunslinger, a sheriff and a bounty hunter. It sits alongside other western slot machines such as Wanted Dead or a Wild and Wild West Gold, but its engine is very different from theirs.

Instead of paylines, Deadwood uses a ways to win system. The five reels show 3, 4, 4, 4 and 3 symbols, and 3 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 3 = 576 possible left-to-right routes. Any symbol matched on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel pays, in any row.

How the Deadwood slot machine works on each spin

  1. Set your total stake. All 576 ways are always active, so the stake covers every route.
  2. Spin. The RNG chooses the result, including any wild, badge or scatter, before the reels move.
  3. If a Hunter wild lands part-way into view, it nudges until all four rows are covered, adding +1 to its multiplier per nudge.
  4. Ways wins are counted from reel 1 rightwards. Wild multipliers on the same way are added together and applied to that win.
  5. Two Sheriff badges on reels 1 and 5 start the Shoot Out effect for that spin; three scatters start free spins.
  6. Wins are credited and the next spin can start after at least 2.5 seconds, the UK minimum.

Nolimit City's own figures say 40.17% of spins return something. That is a hit frequency, not a profit rate: most of those hits are smaller than the stake. Since 31 October 2021, UK games may not celebrate a return equal to or below the stake with win effects, so many of those small hits appear quietly.

Deadwood xNudge wilds and multipliers

The Hunter wild is Nolimit City's xNudge mechanic. It is four symbols tall, so it fits the four-row middle reels, and it always nudges to become fully visible. Each nudge adds one to the multiplier printed on it. A wild that lands with only its top row showing has to nudge three positions to fill the reel, ending at a higher multiplier than one that lands two rows in.

Worked example with two wilds

Say you stake 20p. A Hunter wild on reel 2 nudges twice and shows x3 (starting at x1, then +2). Another on reel 4 nudges three times and shows x4. A low symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5 connects through both wilds. Because Deadwood adds wild multipliers together on a way, that way's win is multiplied by 3 + 4 = 7. If the base pay for the combination is 10p, the way returns 70p. Several ways often pass through the same wilds, so the total can climb quickly, though most spins with a wild still pay modestly.

2 of 42x3

The table assumes the multiplier starts at x1. Check the game rules for the exact starting value on your version.

The Shoot Out feature: low symbols turn wild

When two Sheriff badges land, on the first and fifth reels according to Nolimit City's description, the Shoot Out effect turns every low card symbol (A, K, Q, J and 10) on the middle reels into wilds. On a 4-row middle section that can mean up to 12 positions becoming wild symbols at once, which is how the base game produces its occasional large hits.

The badges also matter in the bonus. Landing two badges alongside three scatters, or landing two badges during a bonus round, upgrades the round to Shoot Out Free Spins, the strongest version of the feature.

Deadwood free spins: Hunter Spins and Gunslinger Spins

Three scatters start a free spins round of 8 spins. There are two modes described by the developer, and the in-game rules explain how the mode is decided on your version:

Deadwood free spins modes
ModeSpinsWhat changes
Hunter Spins8At least one Hunter xNudge wild lands on every spin
Gunslinger Spins8Every wild nudge raises a win multiplier that stays for the whole bonus, with no upper limit
Shoot Out Free SpinsPer game rulesUpgraded version, reached with two Sheriff badges plus scatters or badges during a bonus

Gunslinger Spins work like progressive multipliers: early nudges raise the multiplier that applies to later wins, so a round that starts slowly can still finish strongly, while one that collects a high multiplier near the end may have no spins left to use it. Nolimit City lists free spins as arriving on average about once every 197 spins. That is an average across all play, not a schedule: you could wait far longer, or trigger twice in a few spins.

Deadwood RTP, volatility and cost per session

The default RTP is 96.03%. Nolimit City offers lower-RTP versions to operators, so the setting at your casino could be different; see RTP variants. Volatility is rated extreme. Much of the RTP sits in rare Shoot Out spins and well-multiplied bonuses, so the gap between a typical session and the 96.03% average is wide.

Deadwood: 100 spins at 96.03% RTP

50p£50£1.98
£1£100£3.97
£2£200£7.94
£5£500£19.85

With free spins at about 1 in 197 on average, 100 spins may well pass without a bonus. That is normal for this kind of game, and it is the main reason to plan a session budget rather than a target.

Deadwood max win at UK stake limits

The cap is 13,950 times the stake. It is the largest amount one round can pay; reaching it needs a rare combination of Shoot Out wilds and heavily multiplied ways.

Deadwood max win by stake
Stake13,950x cap
10p£1,395
20p£2,790
£1£13,950
£2 (18–24 limit)£27,900
£5 (25+ limit)£69,750

For comparison, Nolimit City's later Tombstone R.I.P. lists a 300,000x cap. Higher caps generally come with even more extreme swings, which is why a big ceiling is not by itself a reason to choose a game; our max win caps page explains more.

Is the Deadwood slot worth it, and who is it for?

Advantages

  • xNudge wilds make the multiplier logic easy to see.
  • Two distinct free spins modes plus an upgrade route.
  • Developer publishes hit frequency and bonus frequency.
  • 96.03% default RTP.

Drawbacks

  • Extreme volatility: long dry runs are common.
  • Bonus about 1 in 197 spins on average, so waits can be long.
  • Lower-RTP versions exist at some casinos.
  • Dark theme won't appeal to everyone.

Deadwood suits experienced adult players who understand that extreme volatility means losses can arrive fast. If you are newer to slots, our slots for beginners guide suggests easier starting points.

Deadwood myths and facts

  • "A partial wild means the bonus is coming." Wild positions are part of the current spin only; the next spin is drawn fresh.
  • "It's been 300 spins, so the bonus is overdue." A 1 in 197 average doesn't create a debt. See how many spins until a bonus.
  • "One Sheriff badge is a near miss." It is a losing outcome dressed to look close; read about near misses.
  • "Higher stakes improve the odds." The chances are the same at every stake; only the size of wins and losses changes.

The UK version of the Deadwood online slot

Nolimit City's listing shows a feature buy, the Nolimit Bonus, and notes that it may be removed in some regulated markets. Slots supplied to Great Britain don't offer bonus buys, so UK players reach free spins only through scatters; see bonus buy in the UK. Autoplay, turbo and slam-stop have been banned since 31 October 2021 under the Gambling Commission's changes to the remote technical standards (opens in a new tab).

Stakes are capped by law too: the Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) sets £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. The full set of rules is on our UK slot game design rules page.

Where to play the Deadwood slot in the UK

Nolimit City games appear at many UK-licensed casinos, but availability varies and changes, so search the lobby for Deadwood before you open an account. Our partners' offers are listed below. Coral gives new customers 100 free spins after a deposit and £10 of slot bets (10p each, selected games, accept in 48 hours, use within 7 days, no wagering on winnings). Ladbrokes gives 50 free spins a day for up to 10 days after you play £10 on slots (10p each, selected games, no wagering). PlayOJO's 80 no-wagering spins on a £10 first deposit are played on Big Bass Bonanza.

Offer spins are for selected games and may not include Deadwood. All offers are for people aged 18 and over, exclude some payment methods, and have full terms. Frequently asked questions

What is the Deadwood RTP?

The Deadwood RTP is 96.03% at its default setting. That means the game is built to return £96.03 of every £100 staked over millions of spins, with £3.97 kept as the house edge. Nolimit City also supplies lower-RTP versions, so the setting at a particular casino may be lower. You can confirm the figure in the game's information screen before playing. Because volatility is extreme, a session can land far from the average either way. Our guide to how to find a slot's RTP shows where to look.

What is the Deadwood max win?

The Deadwood max win is 13,950 times your total stake. At a 10p stake that is £1,395, at £1 it is £13,950, at the £2 limit for players aged 18 to 24 it is £27,900, and at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over it is £69,750. When a round reaches the cap, it ends and pays that amount. It is a rare outcome that most players will never see, and no official odds of hitting it are published. Our max win glossary entry explains the term.

How do the xNudge wilds work in Deadwood?

The xNudge wilds in Deadwood are four-row Hunter wilds that always nudge until fully visible, and each nudge adds one to the wild's multiplier. A wild that lands with only one row showing nudges three times, so it ends with a bigger multiplier than one that lands almost fully in view. Where two or more wilds sit on the same winning way, their multipliers are added together, not multiplied. The xNudge feature page explains how the mechanic works across Nolimit City games.

How do you trigger Deadwood free spins?

You trigger Deadwood free spins by landing three scatter symbols, which award 8 free spins. Nolimit City describes two modes: Hunter Spins, where at least one Hunter wild lands on every spin, and Gunslinger Spins, where each wild nudge raises a multiplier that lasts the whole bonus. Two Sheriff badges with the scatters, or during a bonus, upgrade the round to Shoot Out Free Spins. The developer gives an average of about 1 in 197 spins for the bonus. See what triggers a bonus round for how triggers are decided.

What is the Shoot Out feature in Deadwood?

The Shoot Out feature turns low card symbols into wilds. It starts when two Sheriff badges land, which Nolimit City describes as appearing on the first and fifth reels. On that spin, every A, K, Q, J and 10 on the middle reels becomes wild, which can create many winning ways at once. In the bonus, two badges upgrade the round to Shoot Out Free Spins. It is a random event like any other result, and seeing one badge doesn't mean a second is close. See wild symbols for the general mechanic.

Is Deadwood a high volatility slot?

Yes, Deadwood is rated extreme volatility. That means wins are irregular: many spins return little or nothing, while much of the RTP is concentrated in rare Shoot Out spins and strongly multiplied bonuses. Even with a 40.17% hit frequency, most hits are smaller than the stake. It is a game for adults who are comfortable losing their whole session budget. Read about high volatility slot machines and use a budget you can afford.

Can I play the Deadwood demo in the UK?

You can usually play a Deadwood demo at UK casinos, but only after verifying that you are 18 or over. The Gambling Commission has required this since May 2019, so demo versions are no longer open to anyone without an account. The demo uses the same rules and RTP as the paid version and is a useful way to see how xNudge wilds and Shoot Out work. It can't predict what will happen with real money. Our demo slots guide covers what to look for.

Can you buy the bonus on Deadwood in the UK?

No, the bonus buy isn't available on Deadwood at UK-licensed casinos. Nolimit City's listing shows a Nolimit Bonus buy option and notes that it may be removed in regulated markets, and slots supplied to Great Britain don't include bonus buys. In the UK, free spins come only from landing scatters during normal play. This also means streams showing repeated bought bonuses don't reflect how the British version plays. Our page on bonus buy in the UK explains the position.

What is the Deadwood hit frequency?

Nolimit City lists Deadwood's hit frequency as 40.17%, meaning roughly four spins in ten return some kind of win. That figure includes very small wins that are worth less than the stake, so it is not the share of spins on which you make a profit. Because the volatility is extreme, the money is concentrated in a few large outcomes rather than spread across those hits. The hit frequency explainer shows how hit rate and volatility fit together.

Is Deadwood fair to play?

Yes, at a UK-licensed casino Deadwood must run on a tested random number generator and pay according to its rules and published RTP. Each spin is independent of the last, and the Gambling Commission requires games to be tested before release. Fair doesn't mean you'll win: the 96.03% RTP includes a house edge, and over time most players lose money. Our page asking are slot machines rigged explains testing, licensing and what to do if you think a game has gone wrong.
