Fire in the Hole 3 slot: what you are playing

Fire in the Hole 3 is the third game in Nolimit City’s mining series, released in 2025. The studio, registered in Malta and owned by Evolution since a deal announced in June 2022, is known for mechanics with an x prefix, such as xBomb, xSplit and xNudge, and for very high maximum wins. This game uses several of them on a grid that starts partly blocked and opens as you win.

No volatility rating for this title has made it into our checked data, and published sources describe it differently. The 70,000× ceiling and the feature design both point to a game where most of the return is concentrated in rare, large results. Plan your stake around that, not around a label.

Fire in the Hole 3202596.05%Up to 46,65670,000× stake

Across three games, the default RTP has barely moved while the ceiling has risen by 10,000× each time. The maths behind that trend is simple: if the overall return stays the same and the top prize grows, the extra potential at the top has to be balanced by more modest results elsewhere. Each sequel keeps the mine-and-wagon theme but changes the bonus details; our guide to slot sequels looks at how studios approach follow-ups.

How the Fire in the Hole 3 slot machine grid opens up

Each spin begins with only some of the rows open and some positions blocked by rock, so the starting number of ways is far below the maximum. Winning combinations, explosions and certain features open further rows, up to six symbols on each of the six reels. The ways count is the number of open positions on each reel multiplied together, which gives these totals when every reel is at the same height:

Fire in the Hole 3 ways at each grid height (all six reels equal)
Open rows on every reelCalculationWays
33⁶729
44⁶4,096
55⁶15,625
66⁶46,656

Blocked positions bring the real count lower, which is why spins often start with fewer ways than the first row of the table. Our expanding reels page explains this family of mechanics and how it differs from Megaways, where the heights are drawn at the start of every spin.

Collapses and xBomb wilds

After a win, the winning symbols explode, the remaining symbols fall and new ones fill the gaps. This cascading reels process, which Nolimit calls collapsing, continues as long as new wins appear, and each collapse can open more of the grid.

The xBomb wild is a substitute that also explodes surrounding symbols when it forms part of a win. Each explosion increases a win multiplier for the next collapse, so a long chain can multiply later wins in the sequence. Like every chain in a cascading game, its length is fixed by the RNG when you press spin. Our wild multipliers page covers how wilds and multipliers combine.

Wild Mining and features buried in the ice

Two systems run in the background of the base game. Wild Mining can activate when matching symbols line up without forming a win, turning some of them into xBomb wilds and setting off a new collapse. Separately, some positions hold symbols frozen in ice. Breaking the ice with an xBomb reveals what is underneath, which can include extra wilds, multipliers, a Wagon Coin or special Nolimit modifiers.

  • xSplit doubles the symbols on its reel, increasing the ways for that spin. Our split symbols page explains the effect.
  • xHole scatters paying symbols across the grid as larger split symbols.
  • Multipliers apply to wins in the collapse where they are revealed.

Buried features are a presentation choice as much as a mechanic: you see the ice before you see the prize, which builds anticipation. The contents of each block, however, are decided with the rest of the spin.

Wagon Coins and Lucky Wagon Spins

Lucky Wagon Spins is the main bonus. It is triggered by Wagon Coin scatters, with more coins opening more of the grid for the round. It plays like a hold and win feature:

  1. Enough Wagon Coins land in one base-game spin to trigger the bonus.
  2. The coins lock in place, each showing a value as a multiple of your stake.
  3. You receive a set number of respins; only coins and special symbols can land.
  4. Each new coin locks too and resets the respin count back to the start.
  5. Special symbols such as dwarfs, dynamite and multipliers can modify the coin values or the grid.
  6. When the respins run out with no new coin, every locked value is added up and paid.

The exact number of starting respins, the values coins can carry and the number of coins needed are in the help screen. No official trigger frequency is part of our checked data, and the bonus should not be treated as due after a long gap. The page on respins explains the reset mechanic in more general terms.

Dwarfs and enhancers inside the bonus

Larger bonus triggers bring enhancers into play on the top row of the grid. Published descriptions include persistent dwarfs, which collect the values in their area on each respin; persistent dynamite, which keeps adding to values; multipliers; and an evil dwarf that can set off a golden spin, giving coins another chance to pay. Collect chests gather values in a similar way to the Cash Collect mechanic.

The stacking of collectors, multipliers and resets is how a respin bonus reaches results thousands of times the stake. It is also why the same bonus can pay very little: if the respins run out quickly, the locked coins may total less than the cost of reaching them.

Fire in the Hole 3 RTP: 96.05% and lower settings

The default RTP of 96.05% gives a house edge of 3.95%. Nolimit also supplies lower settings, so the version at a given casino may cost more. The table uses the default figure.

Fire in the Hole 3: average cost of 100 spins at 96.05% RTP
StakeTotal stakedLong-run average cost
20p£2079p
50p£50£1.98
£1£100£3.95
£2 (18–24 limit)£200£7.90
£5 (25+ limit)£500£19.75

On a game where so much of the return sits in the bonus, a typical 100-spin session is more likely to finish below the average than above it, with the occasional large bonus pulling the long-run figure up. The standard deviation explainer shows why. To find the version, open the help screen; reading slot RTP in the UK explains where.

Fire in the Hole 3 max win: 70,000× at UK stakes

The ceiling is 70,000 times the stake: £14,000 at 20p, £35,000 at 50p, £70,000 at £1, then £140,000 and £350,000 at the two UK caps of £2 (ages 18–24) and £5 (25 and over). It is a design cap that very few spins could ever reach, and no official odds are part of our checked data. Casinos may also set their own maximum payouts in their terms. For how this compares with other games, see what slot has the biggest max win.

The UK version of Fire in the Hole 3

In some markets Nolimit City games include a bonus-buy menu. The British version comes without that menu, so Lucky Wagon Spins have to be won in play. If your version lists any optional stake-raising setting, the help screen gives its price and RTP, and the total you pay per spin is what counts towards the UK limit of £5 (25+) or £2 (18–24).

Since 31 October 2021, UK slots have had no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop and a minimum spin length of 2.5 seconds, and they cannot celebrate a payout no bigger than the stake. The Gambling Commission’s summary of the RTS changes (opens in a new tab) lists them, and our bonus buy in the UK page explains the buy-feature position.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Fire in the Hole 3 RTP?

The default RTP is 96.05%, a house edge of 3.95%, and Nolimit City also supplies lower versions. At the default figure, 100 spins at £1 cost about £3.95 on average over the long run. Because most of the return comes from bonuses, typical short sessions often finish below that average. Check the version in the help screen at your casino. The RTP variants page explains why one game can carry several figures.

What is the Fire in the Hole 3 max win?

Fire in the Hole 3 can pay up to 70,000× the stake. Converted to cash: £14,000 on a 20p spin, £70,000 on £1, £140,000 on the £2 spin allowed to 18 to 24-year-olds, and £350,000 on the £5 spin allowed from age 25. It is higher than the 60,000× of Fire in the Hole xBomb and the 65,000× of Fire in the Hole 2. Reaching it is extremely rare, and casino terms can add payout caps. See max win caps for how ceilings are enforced.

How do Lucky Wagon Spins work?

Lucky Wagon Spins is a hold-and-win style bonus triggered by Wagon Coin scatters. The trigger coins lock in place, and you get a set number of respins in which only coins and special symbols can land. Every new coin locks and resets the respin count. Dwarfs, dynamite and multipliers can boost values. When the respins run out, all locked values are paid. Exact counts are in the help screen. Our hold and win page explains the format.

How many ways to win does Fire in the Hole 3 have?

Fire in the Hole 3 can reach 46,656 ways to win, which is six reels each showing six symbols, or 6 to the power of 6. Spins start with fewer rows open and some positions blocked, so the starting count is much lower. Wins, explosions and certain features open more rows during a spin. The grid resets on the next paid spin. The ways to win slot machines page explains how ways are counted.

What is an xBomb wild in Fire in the Hole 3?

An xBomb wild substitutes for paying symbols and, when it is part of a win, explodes the symbols around it. Each explosion raises a win multiplier for the next collapse in the chain, and xBombs can also break ice to reveal buried features. xBomb is one of Nolimit City’s signature mechanics, also used in Fire in the Hole xBomb. Our Nolimit City page lists the studio’s other x-mechanics.

Is Fire in the Hole 3 better than Fire in the Hole 2?

Neither is better in money terms: their default RTPs are almost identical at 96.05% and 96.07%, and both reach up to 46,656 ways. Fire in the Hole 3 has a higher ceiling of 70,000× against 65,000×, which usually means results are spread more thinly. The bonus features differ in detail. Choose on the features you enjoy and check the RTP version at your casino. See our Fire in the Hole 2 page to compare.

Can you buy the bonus on Fire in the Hole 3 in the UK?

No. The GB release of the game has no feature buy, so the wagon bonus can only come from normal spins. Reviews written for other markets may mention a bonus-buy menu that UK players will not see. If a version shows an optional stake-raising setting, the help screen gives its cost and RTP, and UK stake caps still apply. Read bonus buy in the UK for details.

Is there a Fire in the Hole 3 demo?

There is, at casinos that host it, and it is free demo play, after age verification. The demo follows the real game’s rules and maths. It is the cheapest way to understand the opening grid, the ice and the wagon bonus, which take some time to learn. Remember that demo results are just as random and do not predict real-money play. Our demo slots guide explains how UK demos work.

What is the minimum and maximum stake on Fire in the Hole 3?

In the UK, stakes are capped at £5 a spin once you are 25 and £2 a spin between 18 and 24, whatever the game itself allows. The minimum stake depends on the casino’s version, so check the stake selector before you play. Lower stakes stretch a budget across more spins, which matters on a bonus-heavy game. Our page on the maximum stake on a slot machine also covers land-based limits.

Why does Fire in the Hole 3 have such a high max win?

Nolimit City designs many games with very high ceilings, and this one combines growing grids, multiplying explosions and a collector-heavy respin bonus that can, in rare cases, stack to 70,000 times the stake. With an RTP that stays near 96%, that high ceiling is balanced by many small or empty results. The figure is a limit, not an expectation. Our explainer on slot volatility shows how ceilings and spread are linked.
