The Folsom Prison slot is a Nolimit City game released on 14 June 2022 that starts every spin on just 16 ways, then opens extra cells until the grid can reach 4-6-6-6-4. Its default RTP is 96.07%, Nolimit rates the volatility insane, and the cap is 75,000x the stake. This page explains how the locked grid, Cockroach Nest wilds and both bonus rounds work.
Each spin starts on a small 16-way grid; wilds, scatters, xSplit and xWays open more cells.
Cockroach Nest wilds send cockroaches across the grid, adding multipliers and opening cells.
Three scatters start Walk The Line; four start The Chair, a bigger-grid round.
The default RTP is 96.07%; the max win is 75,000x, or £150,000 at the £2 limit.
Volatility is the top of Nolimit's scale, so most sessions will end below the stake.

Folsom Prison slot: the short version
Folsom Prison is a five-reel video slot from Nolimit City set inside a grim American jail. Unlike most slots, the visible grid is mostly locked when a spin begins. Only the two middle positions on reels 1 to 4 are live, which gives 16 ways, and reel 5 starts closed. Special symbols then open the locked cells around them, and the ways count jumps with every cell that opens.
That makes the game feel like two different slots. Most spins stay small and cheap-looking, and they pay little. Occasionally the grid bursts open with multiplier wilds, and those spins are where the return is concentrated. Nolimit sums this up with its top volatility label.

How the Folsom Prison slot machine opens its grid
Locked cells sit above and below the live middle rows. When a wild, scatter, xSplit or xWays symbol lands, the locked positions next to it open for that spin. Two scatters in the base game also open the middle of reel 5. Because ways wins multiply the number of positions on each reel, every opened cell has a large effect.

Fully opened, before xWays and xSplit add more
The final row of the table is not the ceiling. xWays symbols turn into several copies of one symbol and xSplit doubles the ways along its row, so a fully opened grid with those symbols can climb much higher. Our expanding reels page explains this family of mechanics.
A spin, step by step
Set a stake within the UK limit for your age: £5 at 25 and over, £2 at 18 to 24.
Press spin; the RNG decides the result on the server.
The 16-way starting area lands, with any special symbols in it.
Special symbols open the locked cells next to them, and Cockroach Nest wilds send cockroaches across the grid.
Wins are counted across every active cell, multipliers are applied and the total is paid.
The grid relocks before the next spin, which UK rules space at least 2.5 seconds apart.
Cockroach Nest wilds, xSplit and xWays
Cockroach Nest wilds
The signature symbol is a Cockroach Nest wild. Its starting position turns wild, then cockroaches crawl out across the grid. Where they go they add multipliers to random positions and open any locked cells they pass over. If a nest is split, its multiplier rises by 1. It is a cousin of the walking wild, except that the creatures leave multipliers rather than wilds behind.
xSplit
xSplit splits the symbols along its row, doubling the ways that pass through it, and then becomes two wilds. Our split symbols page compares it with other studios' versions.
xWays
xWays symbols reveal between two and four copies of one randomly chosen paying symbol, which multiplies ways on that reel. The base-game scatters that open reel 5 can also turn into xWays, xSplit, standard wilds or Cockroach Nest wilds after doing their job.
The five inmate symbols are the premium pays. The paytable inside the game shows their values in pounds at your stake.
Folsom Prison free spins: Walk The Line and The Chair
Folsom Prison has two free spins rounds. Both start with 8 spins; the difference is the size of the grid and how many Cockroach Nest wilds you get.

4-4-4-4-4
At least 3 Cockroach Nest wilds per spin
Landing a scatter during Walk The Line can upgrade the round to The Chair. That matters because The Chair starts with four times the ways of Walk The Line and at least three nests per spin instead of one. It is the round with the most potential, and reaching it is rarer than reaching Walk The Line.
A worked illustration shows why. Suppose a nest's cockroaches leave a x3 and a x2 multiplier on positions that are both part of one win of £1 at your stake. If the game multiplies the values together, the win becomes £6; with several wins touching several multipliers across 1,024 ways, results add up quickly. The help screen gives the exact combining rule, which is worth reading before you play.
Folsom Prison RTP and the cost of play
The default Folsom Prison RTP is 96.07%. Nolimit supplies lower settings as well, and at least one slot database lists a 94.01% version, so the number you see in the game's rules is the one that counts. The average cost per 100 spins at the default is shown below.

On a game like this, the average is a poor guide to any single session. Many sessions lose most of their budget, a few finish ahead, and very rare sessions finish far ahead; together they make up the 96.07%. Our house edge and bankroll guides explain how to plan for that.

Is the Folsom Prison slot worth playing?
Advantages
The locked grid makes each spin's potential easy to see
Cockroach Nest wilds add multipliers and open cells at the same time
Two bonus tiers, with an upgrade route from the lower one
Default 96.07% RTP
Drawbacks
Insane volatility: long losing runs are expected
Most base spins use only 16 ways and pay very little
The Chair is rare, and that is where most of the potential sits
The theme is dark and will not suit everyone
It suits players who accept a high chance of losing the budget in exchange for rare large outcomes, and who stick to a set amount. If you want a session that lasts longer per pound, a low volatility slot machine is the opposite end of the scale.
Folsom Prison slot myths
Myths and facts
Myth
Fact
"After many 16-way spins, the grid is due to open."
Every spin is independent; the grid has no memory.
"An upgrade to The Chair is more likely if Walk The Line pays little."
The upgrade is a random event within the round's result, not compensation.
Overseas versions let players buy entry to either bonus round, and offer extra paid draws. None of that is part of the game supplied to Great Britain, where the only way into Walk The Line or The Chair is to land the scatters. That reflects how games are supplied here; see bonus buy in the UK.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Folsom Prison RTP?
The default Folsom Prison RTP is 96.07%, so the house edge is 3.93%. Nolimit City also offers casinos lower settings, and one slot database lists a 94.01% version, so check the rules screen of the game you open. At the default, 100 spins at £1 cost £3.93 on average over the long run, but the game's insane volatility means short sessions can land far from that average. Our RTP explainer explains what the percentage does and does not tell you.
What is the Folsom Prison max win?
The Folsom Prison max win is 75,000 times the stake. At 20p that is £15,000, at £1 it is £75,000, at the £2 limit for players aged 18 to 24 it is £150,000, and at the £5 limit for those 25 and over it is £375,000. Once a round reaches the cap it stops and pays out. Nolimit City does not publish the odds of reaching it on its own site, and it is extraordinarily rare. Compare caps in our answer on which slot has the biggest max win.
How do you trigger Folsom Prison free spins?
Three scatters in view trigger Walk The Line, which awards 8 free spins on a 2-4-4-4-2 grid with at least one Cockroach Nest wild per spin. Four scatters in the base game trigger The Chair, which awards 8 spins on a 4-4-4-4-4 grid with at least three nests per spin. During Walk The Line, a single scatter can upgrade you to The Chair. All triggers are random, so no pattern of play improves the odds. See what triggers a bonus round for the general principle.
Why does Folsom Prison start with only 16 ways?
Folsom Prison starts with only the middle two positions of reels 1 to 4 active, and 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 16 ways. The rest of the grid is locked until wilds, scatters, xSplit or xWays symbols land and open the cells next to them, or until cockroaches walk over them. The small starting grid keeps ordinary spins modest, which is how the game saves up its return for rarer, bigger spins. Our ways to win guide shows how reel sizes multiply.
What is a Cockroach Nest wild?
A Cockroach Nest wild is Folsom Prison's special wild. Its own position becomes wild, and cockroaches then walk across the grid, adding multipliers to random positions and opening locked cells they cross. If an xSplit splits a nest, its multiplier rises by one. The bonus rounds always include at least one nest per spin in Walk The Line and three in The Chair. It is similar in spirit to walking wilds and multiplier wilds, which you can read about on our wild multipliers page.
Can I buy the bonus on Folsom Prison in the UK?
No. The bonus buy and paid draws offered in other countries are not part of the version supplied to UK-licensed casinos, so British players reach the free spins only by landing scatters. This is how studios supply games to Great Britain rather than a single dated Gambling Commission rule. Any video showing a buy menu comes from a different market. The bonus buy in the UK page sets out why.and the related game design rules.
Is Folsom Prison suitable for a small budget?
It can be played at small stakes, but its insane volatility makes it a hard game for a small budget. Most base spins use only 16 ways and pay little, and the bonus that carries most of the potential is rare. With £20 at 20p you get 100 spins, which may pass without any bonus at all. If you want a session that lasts, choose a lower-volatility game and set a firm limit. Our guide to slot volatility and budgets works through examples.
Is there a Folsom Prison demo?
Yes, many UK-licensed casinos list Folsom Prison as a demo, which is free demo play after age verification. The Gambling Commission has required age checks before any free-to-play game since May 2019. The demo uses the same maths as the real game and is a good way to watch how cells open and how nests behave. Demo results tell you nothing about future real-money spins. Our demo slots guide explains how to find and use demos safely.
Who makes the Folsom Prison slot machine?
Folsom Prison is made by Nolimit City, a studio with teams in Sweden, Malta and India and a registered office in St Julian's, Malta. Evolution announced its purchase of the company in June 2022, the same month this game was released. Nolimit is known for its x-mechanics, including xWays, xNudge, xSplit and xBomb, and for very high max win caps. Read more about the studio on our Nolimit City provider page, and compare its prison-themed San Quentin xWays.
