Which Gladiator slot is this?

Searching for the Gladiator slot brings up more than one game. Playtech holds the licence for the 2000 Ridley Scott film and released an earlier Gladiator game before remaking it as Gladiator: Road to Rome in 2017. The figures on this page come from the Road to Rome version, which is the one most UK casinos now list under the Gladiator name. If the game tile in your casino shows a different title or a different RTP, trust the help screen over any summary, including ours.

Whichever version you open, the shape is similar: a 5×3 video slot with 25 lines, film characters on the reels, a Colosseum-themed free games round and the Gladiator Jackpot bonus. It belongs to the TV and film slot machines group and, because of its pooled prize, also to progressive jackpot slot machines.

How the Gladiator slot machine works

Each spin is decided by Playtech’s random number generator before the reels are drawn. The RNG sets the position of each reel; the game reads the 25 lines, pays matching symbols from the left, and checks whether any bonus has been triggered. On a jackpot game there is one extra step: a small fixed share of your stake is added to the jackpot pool, and that share is already accounted for inside the 95.05% figure.

  1. Choose a total stake; the 25 lines are fixed and the stake is split across them.
  2. Part of the stake is sent to the progressive jackpot pool.
  3. The RNG fixes all reel positions.
  4. Line wins are paid, with wilds substituting where the rules allow.
  5. Bonus triggers are checked: the Colosseum free games or the Gladiator Jackpot bonus may start.

The Gladiator Jackpot bonus: nine helmets

The Gladiator Jackpot bonus is a pick-me bonus with nine helmets. Each helmet reveals a bronze, silver or gold prize, and the bonus pays according to what is uncovered. Finding gold in all nine helmets wins the progressive jackpot. The help screen sets out how the bonus is triggered and what each mix of helmets pays; published descriptions do not give a trigger rate, so we won’t suggest one.

As with any pick screen, your choices are cosmetic. The result of the bonus is decided by the RNG before you start picking, so there is no better or worse helmet to open first. Our explainer on how jackpots are funded explains where the money for the top prize comes from.

Live jackpot values change constantly and differ between networks. We don’t quote jackpot sizes; the current figure is shown in the game.

Gladiator free spins: the Colosseum free games

The second feature is the Colosseum free games round. Published descriptions say it starts with a set of free spins, after which you pick shields that can add extra spins, a win multiplier of up to 3x, symbol pay boosts of up to 5x, an extra wild, scatter pays and Gladiator wild nudges. In effect you build your own version of the feature before it plays, though as with the helmets the shield results are decided in advance.

Gladiator RTP: why the jackpot is inside the 95.05%

The Gladiator RTP is 95.05% in published figures, and that number includes the jackpot contribution. In other words, the 95.05% is made up of two parts: the return from ordinary line wins and features, and the return from the jackpot, which is paid out to very few players. For almost everyone, the return they experience from the regular game is lower than the headline figure, because the jackpot part is concentrated in rare single payouts.

Gladiator average cost per 100 spins at 95.05%

50p£50£2.47
£1£100£4.95
£2£200£9.90
£5£500£24.75

That is a 4.95% house edge, a little higher than many non-jackpot games. It is the usual price of a progressive prize; our comparison of fixed vs progressive jackpots explains the trade-off, and Wikipedia’s overview of the progressive jackpot (opens in a new tab) covers the general history.

Gladiator max win and UK stake limits

The top prize in the Gladiator slot is the progressive jackpot, so there is no fixed max win multiple in our checked data. The jackpot grows from a starting seed as players stake, and resets after it is won. What is fixed is the most you can stake per spin in Great Britain.

Aged 18 to 24£221 May 20258p
Aged 25 and over£59 April 202520p

Some jackpot games give a larger share of the prize at higher stakes; whether this one does is set out in the help screen. Either way, the jackpot is a remote outcome, and our page on the odds of winning a slot jackpot explains why those odds are rarely published.

How to check the Gladiator RTP and jackpot rules

The Gambling Commission’s standard on game rules and the likelihood of winning (opens in a new tab) requires casinos to make this information available. In the Gladiator game:

  1. Tap the menu or paytable button.
  2. Find the stated RTP and check whether it is shown with or without the jackpot contribution.
  3. Read the Gladiator Jackpot bonus rules for the trigger and the helmet prizes.
  4. Read the Colosseum rules for the starting spins and shield awards.
  5. Note any rule linking jackpot eligibility or share to your stake.

UK rules that apply to the Gladiator slot

In Great Britain the game runs without autoplay, with a minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin and no turbo or quick-stop, under the slot game design rules in force since 31 October 2021. Your balance and net position stay visible, and returns no larger than your stake can’t be celebrated. Feature buys aren’t part of slots supplied to Great Britain. Jackpot winnings, like all gambling winnings, are not taxed for UK players.

Gladiator online vs jackpot machines in UK venues

Jackpots on venue machines are strictly capped. The largest machines, Category B1 in casinos, allow a £5 stake and a £10,000 prize, or £20,000 for a linked progressive jackpot on a premises basis. Pub machines (Category C) top out at £100. Online progressive jackpots have no such statutory cap, which is why they can grow much larger, and also why they are so rarely won. See linked progressives for how pools are shared.

Is the Gladiator slot worth playing?

Advantages

  • Two distinct features plus a progressive jackpot.
  • Medium volatility keeps the base game steadier than many jackpot games.
  • Recognisable film licence and clear 25-line structure.

Drawbacks

  • 95.05% RTP includes the jackpot, so the everyday return is lower.
  • Several versions exist, which makes summaries unreliable.
  • Jackpot odds are not published.

It suits adults who like a jackpot in the background and accept paying a little extra edge for it. If you would rather have a higher everyday return, our high RTP slot machines page is a better start.

Slots like the Gladiator slot

Within Playtech’s range, Age of the Gods uses a four-tier jackpot on a 5×3, 20-line game with a 95.02% RTP including the contribution, and Jackpot Giant has a progressive prize on 50 lines. Outside Playtech, Mega Moolah is the best-known networked progressive.

Where to play the Gladiator slot in the UK

Playtech jackpot games appear at many UK casinos, but we can’t confirm that a particular partner offers Gladiator now, so search the casino’s lobby; game availability changes. If you are looking at jackpot titles generally, our page on Coral jackpot slots shows how to browse that lobby. The offers here are for new customers aged 18+ and terms apply. Coral: deposit and bet £10 on slots for 100 free spins at 10p on selected games, accepted within 48 hours, valid for seven days, with no wagering on winnings. Ladbrokes: play £10 on slots to get 50 free spins a day for 10 days (500 maximum, 10p each, no wagering), claimed before 23:59 daily.

PlayOJO: 80 no-wagering free spins at 10p on Big Bass Bonanza with a first deposit of at least £10. Free spins from these offers are unlikely to be usable on progressive jackpot games, and PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe and prepaid deposits don’t qualify at Coral or Ladbrokes. Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of the Gladiator slot?

The published RTP for Gladiator (Road to Rome) is 95.05%, and it includes the share of each stake that funds the progressive jackpot. Because the jackpot part is paid to very few players, the return most people see from regular play is lower than 95.05%. Over the long run the game keeps an average of £4.95 per £100 staked. Check the help screen for the version you are playing. Our page on jackpot contribution explains how the split works.

How do you win the Gladiator jackpot?

The progressive jackpot is won through the Gladiator Jackpot bonus, a pick of nine helmets. Each helmet reveals a bronze, silver or gold prize, and finding gold in all nine wins the jackpot. The trigger for the bonus and the prizes for other helmet combinations are listed on the game’s help screen. The result is decided by the RNG, so the order you pick in makes no difference. Read what happens when a slot jackpot is won for how payouts and resets work.

How do the Gladiator free spins work?

The Colosseum free games start with a set of free spins, then you pick shields that can add more spins, a win multiplier of up to 3x, symbol pay boosts of up to 5x, an extra wild, scatter pays or Gladiator wild nudges. The round then plays with the extras you uncovered. As with the jackpot helmets, the shield results are fixed before you pick. The help screen has the trigger and exact awards. See our free spins feature page for the general idea.

What is the Gladiator slot max win?

The top prize is a progressive jackpot rather than a fixed multiple of your stake, so its size changes as players stake and resets after each win. We don’t quote live jackpot values because they move constantly. In Great Britain your stake is limited to £5 a spin if you are 25 or over, and £2 if you are 18 to 24, whatever the jackpot size. The help screen explains any link between stake and jackpot eligibility. Our slot jackpots page covers the basics.

Is Gladiator: Road to Rome the same as Gladiator?

Road to Rome is Playtech’s 2017 remake of its Gladiator game and is the version most UK casinos now list. It keeps the film licence, 25 lines, the Colosseum free games and the nine-helmet jackpot bonus, with a published 95.05% RTP including the jackpot contribution. Older or regional versions may differ, so always check the title and RTP in the game itself. Our dedicated Gladiator: Road to Rome page looks at that version on its own.

Can I play the Gladiator slot for free?

Some UK casinos offer free demo play of Gladiator after age verification, which has been required for free-to-play games since May 2019. Progressive jackpot games are less often available in demo mode, because the jackpot itself is funded by real stakes, so you may find the game only in real-money play. A demo, where offered, does not predict real results. Our demo slots guide explains how demos work in the UK.

Is the Gladiator slot high volatility?

Published figures rate it as medium volatility. The base game and free games produce a fairly regular mix of small and mid-sized results, while the progressive jackpot adds a very rare, very large outcome on top. That jackpot is one reason long-run averages are hard to feel in a single session. Set a budget you are comfortable losing in full. Our explainer on slot volatility explains what the ratings mean.

Do I pay tax on a Gladiator jackpot win?

No. Gambling winnings, including progressive jackpots, are not taxed for players in the UK. Operators pay duty on their gambling profits instead; remote gaming duty on online casino games rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026. Interest or investment income from money you later save could be taxable in the normal way, as with any savings. Our page on tax on slot winnings gives the details.

Why does a jackpot slot have a lower RTP?

Part of each stake goes into the jackpot pool, and that money is paid out only when someone wins the top prize. The RTP figure counts it, but from the point of view of a typical session it isn’t available, so the everyday return feels lower than the headline. Gladiator’s 95.05% sits a little below many non-jackpot games for that reason. Our page on how jackpots are funded walks through the maths.
