Playtech slots come from one of the oldest and largest gambling software companies, founded in Tartu, Estonia, in 1999 and now listed in London, best known to slot players for the Age of the Gods progressive jackpot network. This guide covers its history, signature games and their published figures, how jackpot contributions affect RTP, and what UK rules mean for Playtech games.
Playtech was founded in 1999 in Tartu, Estonia, by Teddy Sagi; it is headquartered in Douglas, Isle of Man, and listed on the London Stock Exchange (PTEC).
Its best-known slots are the Age of the Gods jackpot games, plus Great Blue, Buffalo Blitz and Jackpot Giant.
On jackpot games the stated RTP includes the jackpot contribution, so the everyday return is lower than the headline figure.
Playtech has owned the Swedish studio Quickspin since 2016.

Who makes Playtech slots?
Playtech was founded in 1999 in Tartu, Estonia, by the entrepreneur Teddy Sagi. It floated on London’s AIM market in 2006, later moved to the main market of the London Stock Exchange under the ticker PTEC, and is headquartered in Douglas, Isle of Man. Our online slot providers hub lists it alongside much younger studios, but Playtech is a different kind of business: as well as games, it builds the casino platforms and live dealer studios that operators run on.
That breadth matters for slot players because it explains where you meet Playtech games. Some casinos use Playtech’s platform for their whole site, while others take only selected slots or the jackpot network through a slot aggregator. The company’s own description of its products is on the Playtech website (opens in a new tab).
In 2016 Playtech bought the Swedish studio Quickspin, maker of games such as Hot Sync. Quickspin kept its own brand and style, so its slots don’t look like classic Playtech titles even though the same group owns both.
Age of the Gods: Playtech’s jackpot network
For most UK slot players, Playtech means Age of the Gods. The original game, released in 2016, is a 5×3, 20-payline slot themed on Greek mythology, with a published RTP of 95.02% that includes the jackpot contribution. Its main draw is a four-tier progressive jackpot, topped by the Ultimate Power prize, that is shared across a whole family of Age of the Gods games.
Spin-offs such as Age of the Gods: God of Storms (2017) feed the same jackpot while adding their own features; God of Storms has Wild Wind Respins with a moving ship wild and lists an RTP of 96.14%, again including the jackpot contribution. Because every game on the network contributes, the pots can grow far beyond what any single title could fund. Our explainer on linked progressives shows how pooled jackpots are built, and the general idea of a progressive jackpot (opens in a new tab) is older than online slots.
The jackpot is a random, rare event. Playtech doesn’t publish the odds of winning a particular tier, and we don’t quote jackpot amounts because they change constantly. See the odds of winning a slot jackpot for what can and can’t be known.

A few patterns show through. Playtech’s older games often carry RTPs a little below 96%, and jackpot titles sit lower still because part of every stake funds the pot. Halloween Fortune is the exception at 97.06% for its top version. Buffalo Blitz and its sequel use 4,096 ways on a 6×4 grid, a format explained on our ways to win page. Great Blue, Jackpot Giant and the Gladiator jackpot game round out the classics.
Playtech slots RTP: how jackpot contributions work
On a jackpot slot, the RTP printed in the rules is normally the total return, including the slice of each stake that goes into the progressive pots. Ordinary players almost never win the top tiers, so the part of the RTP they actually experience is smaller than the headline. The table compares the average cost of 100 spins on Age of the Gods with a non-jackpot game at 96.03% such as Great Blue.

These are long-run averages across very many spins, not predictions for a session, and on the jackpot game part of that return is paid to a handful of jackpot winners. If the jackpot isn’t why you’re playing, a non-jackpot game with a higher RTP returns more on average. Our jackpot contribution glossary entry and how jackpots are funded explain the mechanics.
How to check a Playtech slot’s RTP and jackpot rules
Open the Playtech game and select the help or paytable icon, usually in the game menu.
Find the RTP statement and note whether it says the figure includes the jackpot contribution.
If a range is given, check which figure applies at the casino you’re using.
Read how the jackpot is triggered: on many network games it is a random bonus game rather than a symbol combination.
Check whether a minimum stake applies for jackpot eligibility, and set your stake accordingly.
Playtech slots and UK rules
Even long-standing Playtech classics were reworked for Britain when the online slot design rules arrived on 31 October 2021. An Age of the Gods session now needs a press for every spin, each round runs for 2.5 seconds or longer, there is no quick-stop, and a return that only matches or undercuts the bet doesn’t trigger celebratory effects. Spin size is limited by age, £2 below 25 and £5 above, as the Gambling Commission’s stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) sets out.
The stake caps matter for jackpot games in particular. If a jackpot needs a minimum stake to qualify, that minimum still has to fit within your limit; nothing lets you stake more to chase a bigger share of the pot. Features that let you buy straight into a bonus aren’t offered on slots at UK-licensed casinos. To see which Playtech companies hold British licences, search the Commission’s register of gambling businesses (opens in a new tab).
Are Playtech slots worth playing?
Playtech suits players who want recognisable classics, straightforward payline games and, above all, access to a long-running jackpot network. It is less suited to anyone chasing the highest possible RTP, since many of its best-known titles sit below 96%.
Advantages
Age of the Gods offers a shared multi-tier progressive jackpot
Long track record and a London Stock Exchange listing
Simple payline and ways games that are easy to learn
Quickspin titles add a different, more modern style
“A big jackpot is about to drop.” A large pot only means it hasn’t been won for a while; each spin’s chance stays the same.
“Higher stakes guarantee a better jackpot chance.” Some games do weight jackpot chances by stake, but no stake makes winning likely, and UK caps apply regardless.
“The RTP is what I’ll get back.” It is a long-run average across all players, including the rare jackpot winners.

Frequently asked questions
Who owns Playtech?
Playtech is a public company listed on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker PTEC, so it is owned by its shareholders. It was founded in 1999 in Tartu, Estonia, by Teddy Sagi, floated on AIM in 2006 and is headquartered in Douglas, Isle of Man. Playtech in turn owns other businesses, including the slot studio Quickspin, acquired in 2016. Our Quickspin provider page covers that studio, and what is a slot provider explains the wider structure.
What is the RTP of Age of the Gods?
The original Age of the Gods slot has a published RTP of 95.02%, and that figure includes the contribution to its progressive jackpot. In practice, most players experience a lower everyday return, because the jackpot share is paid only to rare winners. God of Storms, a spin-off on the same network, lists 96.14% including the jackpot. Always check the help screen where you play. Our Age of the Gods guide breaks down the features and jackpot tiers.
How does the Age of the Gods jackpot work?
Age of the Gods games share a four-tier progressive jackpot, topped by the Ultimate Power prize. A small part of every qualifying stake across the network feeds the pots, and a jackpot game is triggered at random during play rather than by lining up particular symbols. Playtech doesn’t publish the odds of each tier. Because the jackpot is pooled, it can grow large, but winning it on any spin is very unlikely. See our explainer on what happens when a slot jackpot is won.
Which Playtech slot has the highest RTP?
Among the Playtech games in our checked data, Halloween Fortune has the highest top RTP at 97.06%, though lower versions exist. Next come Great Blue at 96.03% and God of Storms at 96.14% including its jackpot contribution. Remember that RTP is a long-run average; it doesn’t change the fact that most sessions lose. Our high RTP slot machines guide and are high RTP slots better? put the numbers in context.
Is Buffalo Blitz a Playtech slot?
Yes. Buffalo Blitz is a Playtech slot from 2016 with a 6×4 grid, 4,096 ways to win, high volatility and an RTP of 95.96% (a 94.01% version also exists). Its 2020 sequel, Buffalo Blitz II, keeps 4,096 ways in the base game, expands to as many as 14,400 in free spins and lists a 10,000× maximum win. Both suit players comfortable with large swings. Our Buffalo Blitz guide and Buffalo Blitz II page have the detail.
Are Playtech slots fair?
Playtech slots offered by UK-licensed casinos use tested random number generators and must meet the Gambling Commission’s technical standards, including clear rules and return information. Fairness in that sense doesn’t mean the odds favour you: every slot has a house edge, and jackpot games set aside part of the return for rare winners. Outcomes are independent, so past spins don’t affect the next one. Read more in are slot machines rigged?
Does Playtech make live casino games too?
Yes. Alongside slots, Playtech is known for live casino and for the casino platforms that some operators run their whole sites on. That is one reason its games turn up in so many lobbies. This site covers slots and slot machines, so for the slot side, the best-known slots table on this page is the place to start, along with our Great Blue guide, and the slots vs roulette comparison explains how the maths differs from table games.
What is the maximum stake on Playtech slots in the UK?
It depends on your age: a Playtech slot at a British casino accepts up to £2 a spin from 18 to 24-year-olds and up to £5 from those 25 and older. These limits have applied to all online slots since 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025 respectively, and any extra stake within the same game cycle counts towards them. Playtech jackpot games that need a minimum stake still have to work within those caps. Our stake limit rules page has the detail.
Can I play Playtech slots for free?
In some cases. UK casinos may let account holders try a Playtech game with demo credit once their age has been confirmed, which has been compulsory since May 2019. Progressive jackpots are usually not available in demo mode, because the pot is funded by real stakes. Demos are useful for learning how features such as Wild Wind Respins work before you stake money. Our demo slots guide explains the limits of demo play.
