Gems Bonanza is a Pragmatic Play cluster pays slot from 2020 on an 8x8 grid: 96.51% RTP, high volatility, 10,000x max win.
Wins come from groups of touching gems, not paylines; bigger clusters pay more.
Lucky Wilds land in random positions, and a map path leads to a Spin Feature that can add symbols.
Gold Fever switches on all spin modifiers; its final level plays with a 10x win multiplier, per Pragmatic Play.
At 20p a spin, 100 spins stake £20 with a long-run average cost of 70p; real sessions vary widely.

What is the Gems Bonanza slot?
Gems Bonanza is a Pragmatic Play release from 2020 that swaps reels and paylines for an 8x8 grid of 64 positions. It belongs to the cluster pays slot machine family: a win forms when enough identical symbols touch each other horizontally or vertically. The theme is a jungle treasure hunt, with gemstones and carved idols as symbols and a map that tracks your progress.
The game description on Pragmatic Play's website (opens in a new tab) is short. It names the 8x8 grid, a map where coloured markings form a path to a Spin Feature, Lucky Wilds that land in random positions, and a Gold Fever feature that activates every modifier and finishes with a 10x win multiplier. The finer rules, such as minimum cluster size and how the map fills, are set out in the help screen, which you should read before you play.

How cluster pays work on the Gems Bonanza slot machine
On a payline slot, symbols must line up across reels in fixed patterns. On a cluster game, position only matters in terms of what touches what. A group of matching gems that connect edge to edge forms a cluster, and the paytable sets a value for each cluster size. Diagonal contact usually doesn't count. The bigger the group, the higher the pay, often with steep jumps at the top sizes.
Here's a small diagram-in-words of one corner of the grid, where R is a red gem and other letters are other symbols:

The seven Rs all touch at least one other R edge to edge, so they form a single cluster of seven. If the minimum cluster in the help screen is five, that pays the seven-gem value for red. On a £1 stake, an illustrative small-cluster value of 0.4x would return 40p, which counts as a loss under UK rules and won't be celebrated. The real values are in the game's paytable.
Many cluster games remove winning symbols and drop new ones in, in the style of cascading reels. Check the Gems Bonanza help screen to confirm how it handles symbols after a win in the version you load.
Lucky Wilds and the Spin Feature
Pragmatic describes Lucky Wilds as wilds that land in random positions on the grid. On a cluster game a wild works by joining any adjacent cluster, so a single wild sitting between two groups of the same colour can link them into one bigger, better-paying cluster. That linking effect is why wilds tend to have more impact on cluster grids than on payline games.
The map is the game's progression system. According to Pragmatic, coloured markings form a path that leads to a Spin Feature, which can bring new symbols onto the screen. In practice that means wins in the base game feed a meter that eventually adds extra symbols or modifiers. Like everything else on the grid, whether and when it fills is decided by the RNG. Our wild symbols and reel modifiers pages explain how these elements change a game's maths.
Gems Bonanza free spins and the Gold Fever bonus
Gold Fever is the Gems Bonanza bonus. Pragmatic's description says it activates all of the spin modifiers at once and that reaching its final level gives a 10x win multiplier. That structure, where a bonus round climbs through levels and saves its biggest multiplier for the end, is a form of increasing multiplier in free spins.
The worked effect of a 10x multiplier is simple: a cluster worth 2x stake on a 50p spin pays £1 normally and £10 at the final level. Because only some rounds reach the last level, the value of Gold Fever varies a great deal from one trigger to the next. The help screen shows how Gold Fever is triggered, how many spins it lasts and how levels are reached in your version.
Pragmatic Play games sometimes include a bonus buy in other markets. Slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos don't offer one, so Gold Fever must be triggered in play.
Gems Bonanza RTP and volatility in pounds
The Gems Bonanza RTP is 96.51%, slightly above the 96% many slots launch at, with a house edge of 3.49%. High volatility means the return is weighted towards rare, larger results, especially Gold Fever at its later levels. Here is the long-run arithmetic:

Those averages assume enormous numbers of spins. Over 100 or 500, a high-volatility game is much more likely to finish below them than above them, because a small number of big bonus results lift the long-run average. Some Pragmatic games exist in lower-RTP versions, so confirm the figure in the help screen. See are high RTP slots better for what a fraction of a percentage point really means.

The stake caps of £5 per spin for those aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24 were confirmed in the government's announcement of online slot stake limits (opens in a new tab) and took effect in April and May 2025. Pragmatic doesn't publish the chance of reaching 10,000x, which would require a large cluster run during Gold Fever with the top multiplier active.
How to play Gems Bonanza, step by step
Open the help screen and note the RTP, minimum cluster size and Gold Fever rules.
Set a deposit limit at the casino before you load the game.
Choose a stake; with high volatility, a lower stake stretches a budget further.
Press spin for each round; UK rules ban autoplay and set a 2.5-second minimum per spin.
Watch the map meter: it shows progress towards the Spin Feature.
Check your net position on screen and stop when you reach your planned limit.
Free demo play of Gems Bonanza is available at UK-licensed casinos after age verification, a rule since May 2019. The demo uses identical maths and is the easiest way to see how clusters form and how the map fills. Treat the results as a tour of the features rather than a preview of returns: a high-volatility game can look very different over a few hundred spins. Our free slot machines page explains UK demo rules.

Hit rate depends on the maths, not on the number of positions.
If you like gem clusters, Gemix uses a similar jewel theme on a grid, and Aloha! Cluster Pays is one of the earlier cluster designs. Frequently asked questions
What is the Gems Bonanza RTP?
The Gems Bonanza RTP is 96.51%, according to Pragmatic Play, so the long-run average return is £96.51 for every £100 staked and the house edge is 3.49%. It's a long-run figure, and with high volatility your results over a single session can differ a lot. Some casinos may offer a different RTP version, so check the help screen. See what is a good RTP for a slot for context.
What is the Gems Bonanza max win?
The Gems Bonanza max win is 10,000x your stake. At the UK cap of £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, that's £50,000; at the £2 cap for 18 to 24-year-olds, it's £20,000. Pragmatic Play doesn't publish the chance of hitting it, and it would require a large cluster run during Gold Fever with the top multiplier active. See our max win glossary entry.
How does cluster pays work in Gems Bonanza?
Cluster pays means a win forms when enough identical symbols touch each other horizontally or vertically anywhere on the 8x8 grid, rather than along paylines. The paytable sets a value for each cluster size, and larger clusters pay more. Wilds join adjacent clusters and can link two groups into one. The minimum cluster size and values are in the help screen. Our cluster pays slot machines page explains the mechanic in depth.
What is Gold Fever in Gems Bonanza?
Gold Fever is the Gems Bonanza bonus feature. Pragmatic Play says it activates all of the game's spin modifiers at once and that reaching its last level gives a 10x win multiplier. Because not every round reaches the final level, the value of Gold Fever varies widely. The help screen explains how it's triggered and how levels are reached. There's no bonus buy in the UK. See what triggers a bonus round.
Does Gems Bonanza have free spins?
Gems Bonanza's main bonus is Gold Fever, which Pragmatic Play describes as a feature that activates every modifier and builds to a 10x multiplier. Whether it is presented as a set number of free spins, and how many, is shown in the in-game rules for your version. As with any bonus, the trigger is random and never becomes due. Our free spins feature page explains how bonus rounds are built.
What are Lucky Wilds?
Lucky Wilds are wild symbols that Pragmatic Play says land in random positions on the Gems Bonanza grid. On a cluster game, a wild counts as any symbol it touches, so it can extend a cluster or join two separate groups of the same gem into one larger, better-paying cluster. Their placement is decided by the RNG before the grid appears. Our random wilds page compares similar features.
Can I play Gems Bonanza for free?
You can play Gems Bonanza in demo mode with play credits, but UK-licensed casinos must verify your age before letting you use free demos, a rule since May 2019. The demo runs the same maths as the real game, so it shows how clusters, Lucky Wilds and the map work. It won't predict real results, because a high-volatility game varies hugely over short sessions. See our demo slots guide.
Is Gems Bonanza high volatility?
Yes, Gems Bonanza is a high-volatility slot. A large part of its 96.51% return is concentrated in Gold Fever rounds that reach the higher levels, so many sessions will be flat or losing while a few produce big wins. Choose a stake that leaves room in your budget for long quiet runs. Our high volatility slot machines page lists other games with the same profile.
Does the Gems Bonanza map mean a bonus is coming?
The map shows progress towards the Spin Feature, but it doesn't make any individual spin more likely to win. Each spin's outcome is decided independently by the RNG, and progress features exist partly to make play feel purposeful. Treat the map as information, not as a reason to keep spinning past your limit. Our page on why slot machines are absorbing looks at design features like this.
What is the most I can stake on Gems Bonanza in the UK?
In the UK, you can stake up to £5 per spin on Gems Bonanza if you're aged 25 or over, and up to £2 per spin if you're aged 18 to 24. These caps took effect on 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025 and apply to all online slots at UK-licensed casinos. The casino applies the limit automatically using your verified age. See the 18 to 24 stake limit.
