The Extra Chilli slot is Big Time Gaming's 2018 Megaways game: six reels of two to seven symbols, up to 117,649 ways, cascading wins, high volatility and a 20,000× stake cap. In Great Britain its RTP is up to 96.41%, not the 96.82% often quoted, because that higher figure includes a bonus buy UK casinos don't offer.
Extra Chilli is a Megaways game: reel heights change each spin, giving up to 117,649 ways.
Winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in, so one paid spin can chain several wins.
The 96.82% RTP sometimes quoted includes Feature Drop; the UK figure is up to 96.41%.
The 20,000× cap is £40,000 at the £2 limit for 18–24s and £100,000 at £5 for over-25s.
Extra Chilli and Extra Chilli Megaways are names for the same game.

What the Extra Chilli slot is
Big Time Gaming, the Sydney studio that created the Megaways mechanic, released Extra Chilli in 2018 as a follow-up to Bonanza Megaways. It moved the reels from a gold mine to a street market full of chillies, kept the six-reel Megaways structure and cascading wins, and reworked the free spins. You will also see it listed as Extra Chilli Megaways; it is the same game, and our Extra Chilli Megaways page approaches it from the Megaways side.
When you press spin, the game's random number generator has already decided the outcome, including how tall each reel will be. The animation shows that decision; it can't be influenced by when you press or how fast the reels appear to move.
Choose a total stake. Every available way is played; there are no lines to select.
The RNG sets how many symbols each of the six reels shows, from two to seven, and fills the positions.
Published layouts also show a horizontal reel above the middle reels, whose symbols count towards those reels' totals.
Wins are paid for matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, in any row.
Winning symbols are removed and new symbols fall into the gaps; any new wins are paid and the process repeats.
When no further wins form, the spin ends; at least 2.5 seconds must separate the start of one spin from the next.
How the 117,649 ways are reached
The number of ways is simply the number of symbols on each reel multiplied together. Seven symbols on all six reels gives 7⁶, which is 117,649. That is the top of the range; most spins are well below it.

Extra Chilli cascades: how one spin pays more than once
Extra Chilli uses cascading reels, which Big Time Gaming calls reactions. After a win is paid, the winning symbols disappear and the symbols above drop down, with new ones filling the space. If the new arrangement forms another win, that is paid too, and the chain continues until nothing new connects.
The cascades cost nothing extra: they are all part of the one stake. That is why the game can sometimes pay several small wins in a row from a single spin, and why its maths is harder to judge by eye than a simple line game. The RTP already includes every cascade.
Worked cascade example
At 50p a spin, imagine the first result pays three low symbols across 12 ways for 40p in total. They vanish, new symbols fall, and a second chain of four mid symbols across 6 ways pays 90p. A third drop produces nothing. The spin returns £1.30 from one 50p stake. Most spins return less than the stake or nothing at all; this is how the occasional good one is built.
Extra Chilli free spins and the unlimited multiplier
Scatter symbols start the free spins, and more scatters mean more spins; the paytable in your version shows the exact count. Published descriptions mention a wheel, offered before the round in some versions, that lets you gamble the spins you have won for a chance at more, at the risk of losing the round. It is optional, and it doesn't raise the RTP; if your version shows it, choosing to collect is always possible.
During the free spins, a win multiplier starts at 1× and goes up by one after every cascade. Published descriptions say it doesn't reset between free spins, so a long round with lots of cascades can build a large multiplier. That is a classic case of increasing multipliers in free spins.

Extra Chilli RTP: why the UK figure is lower
Two RTP figures are commonly quoted. Slot databases list 96.82%, but that number includes Feature Drop, Big Time Gaming's paid shortcut into the free spins. Without Feature Drop, the published RTP is up to 96.41%, and lower settings down to around 96.15% exist. Because UK casinos don't offer the buy, the lower set of figures is the one that applies in Great Britain.
The difference between 96.82% and 96.41% matters: the house edge rises from 3.18% to 3.59%, about 13% more on average. Our explainers on RTP and RTP variants cover why one game can carry several figures.
If you see 96.82% next to Extra Chilli on a UK casino page, check the in-game help screen. The figure that matters is the one for the version without Feature Drop.

High volatility means real sessions vary far more than these averages suggest. Many sessions of 100 spins end well below the average, and a minority end far above it after a strong free spins round.
Many UK casinos offer free demo play of Extra Chilli, after age verification; the age check has been required for play-for-fun games since May 2019. A demo is a good way to see cascades and the multiplier in action. It can't tell you the game's true return, because that only shows across millions of spins.
Extra Chilli myths
Advantages
Fact: the number of ways is set at random each spin and doesn't depend on your stake.
Fact: cascades are part of the same paid spin and are already counted in the RTP.
Fact: the free spins multiplier only lasts for the round in which it was built.
Drawbacks
Myth: a big screen of 117,649 ways means a win is more valuable.
Myth: gambling the spins on the wheel improves your chances overall.
Myth: after a long dry run the game is due a bonus.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Extra Chilli in the UK?
The RTP of Extra Chilli in the UK is up to 96.41%. The 96.82% figure you may see includes Feature Drop, a paid route into the free spins that UK-licensed casinos don't offer, so it doesn't apply in Great Britain. Lower settings without Feature Drop, down to around 96.15%, also exist, so check the help screen for the version loaded. RTP is an average across millions of spins and says little about one session. Our guide to reading slot RTP in the UK shows where to find the figure.
What is the Extra Chilli max win?
The Extra Chilli max win is 20,000 times your stake. That is £4,000 at 20p, £20,000 at £1, £40,000 at the £2 limit for players aged 18 to 24 and £100,000 at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over. Reaching the cap requires an unusually long free spins round in which the multiplier climbs very high, so it is extremely rare and no published odds exist. The game ends the round once the cap is hit. Our explainer on max win caps covers why studios set them.
Is Extra Chilli the same as Extra Chilli Megaways?
Yes, Extra Chilli and Extra Chilli Megaways are two names for the same Big Time Gaming game. Casinos and review sites use both names, often in the same lobby. The rules, the RTP figures, the 117,649 maximum ways and the 20,000× cap are the same under either name. A separate follow-up, Extra Chilli Epic Spins, is a different game released in 2023. Our Extra Chilli Megaways page covers the game with a focus on the Megaways mechanic.
How do the Extra Chilli free spins work?
Extra Chilli's free spins start when enough scatter symbols land, with more scatters giving more spins. During the round a win multiplier starts at 1× and rises by one after each cascade, and published descriptions say it carries over between free spins rather than resetting. Some versions offer an optional wheel before the round that lets you gamble the spins for more, at the risk of losing them. Exact counts are in the help screen. For background, read how free spins work on slot machines.
What is Feature Drop on Extra Chilli?
Feature Drop is Big Time Gaming's version of a bonus buy, letting players in some markets pay a set amount to go straight into the free spins. It isn't available at UK-licensed casinos, because slots supplied to Great Britain don't include bonus buys. Because the buy route has a slightly higher return built in, the RTP quoted with Feature Drop, 96.82%, is higher than the up to 96.41% that applies to UK players. Our bonus buy in the UK page explains how this affects games in Britain.
How many ways to win does Extra Chilli have?
Extra Chilli has up to 117,649 ways to win. Each of the six reels shows between two and seven symbols, and the number of ways is those heights multiplied together, so seven on every reel gives 7 to the power of six. Most spins have far fewer ways than the maximum. The number changes every spin and doesn't change your stake. See what 243 ways means for how ways-based wins are counted.
Is Extra Chilli high volatility?
Yes, Extra Chilli is rated high volatility. Much of its return sits in the free spins, where the growing multiplier can turn cascades into large wins, while the base game often pays less than the stake. That means sessions swing more and budgets can run down before a feature lands. High volatility doesn't lower or raise the RTP; it changes how unevenly wins arrive. If you prefer a steadier ride, our list of medium volatility slot machines offers alternatives.
Can I play Extra Chilli for free in the UK?
Yes, you can try free demo play of Extra Chilli at many UK casinos, after age verification. UK-licensed operators have had to check you are at least 18 before allowing any play-for-fun game since May 2019, so you'll need to register and verify. The demo plays exactly like the real game with pretend credits and is a sensible way to learn how cascades and the multiplier work. It can't show you the long-run return. Our demo slot age verification page explains the rule.
Should I use the gamble wheel on Extra Chilli?
The gamble wheel, where your version includes it, is optional, and using it doesn't improve your long-run return. It lets you risk the free spins already won for a chance at more, and if the wheel lands against you the round is lost. Whether to use it is a question of how much risk you want, not a way to gain an edge. If you are trying to make a budget last, collecting the spins you have keeps things steadier. Our page on slot machine tips covers what genuinely helps.
What is the maximum stake on Extra Chilli in the UK?
The maximum stake on Extra Chilli in the UK is £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 a spin for those aged 18 to 24. The limits apply to all online slots in Great Britain and came into force on 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025. A casino may set a lower maximum of its own. Stake size affects how much you win or lose in pounds but not your odds. Our page on online slot stake limits explains how operators apply the age-based caps.
