The Esqueleto Explosivo slot is Thunderkick’s Day of the Dead game: five reels, 17 paylines, low volatility, a listed 96.0% RTP and a 700× stake max win. Its hook is a chain of exploding wins in which each new win doubles the multiplier. Below is how that chain works, what it can and can’t pay, and what a session costs.
Thunderkick slot on five reels with 17 paylines, low volatility and a listed 96.0% RTP.
Winning symbols explode and new ones drop in; each consecutive win in the chain doubles the multiplier.
Max win is 700× stake: £1,400 at the £2 limit for 18–24s and £3,500 at £5 for players 25 and over.
A gentle game with a low ceiling; the sequel, Esqueleto Explosivo 2, is medium volatility with a 5,000× cap.

Esqueleto Explosivo slot: a mariachi band of skeletons
Thunderkick is a Stockholm studio founded in 2012. It stays independent, releases no branded games and works as a partner of Relax Gaming’s distribution network. It holds two Gambling Commission accounts (40165 and 41752), so its games can be offered at British casinos. Esqueleto Explosivo is the series that made its name: a band of skeleton musicians in a Mexican Day of the Dead setting, with cartoon skulls as the symbols.
Under the theme it is a compact, low-volatility video slot. It has no big bonus wheel or pick game. Instead, the excitement comes from one mechanic that runs in the base game, the exploding cascade with a doubling multiplier. Thunderkick later built a sequel, Esqueleto Explosivo 2, around the same idea. More games like this are listed in our slot machine guides.
How the Esqueleto Explosivo slot machine works
Each spin is a chain of events, and the whole chain is decided by the random number generator at the moment you press spin:
Choose your stake; all 17 paylines are always played.
Press spin. In Great Britain there is no autoplay, and each spin lasts at least 2.5 seconds.
The skulls drop into the five reels. Wins are paid on the 17 lines from left to right.
Winning skulls explode and disappear. The skulls above fall to fill the gaps and new ones drop in from the top.
If the new arrangement makes another win, it pays at the next multiplier level and explodes in turn.
The chain ends when a drop produces no win. The multiplier then resets for your next spin.
This falling-symbol style is often called a tumble or avalanche; our glossary entry on the avalanche explains the naming. Because the result is fixed before the animation, watching the drop or tapping the screen does not affect what happens.
The Mucho Multiplier: how the doubling chain pays
Thunderkick calls the climbing multiplier the Mucho Multiplier. It starts at 1× and doubles with each consecutive explosion in a chain, up to a top level of 32×.

The 50p figure is an illustration, not a paytable value. The point is how quickly the multiplier grows: a modest win that happens to land as the sixth link in a chain is worth 32 times its face value. Most chains, though, stop after the first or second drop, and that is where most of the game’s returns come from. Our explainer on progressive multipliers compares this with other climbing designs.
Explosivo wilds
The game’s wild is an exploding skull. As well as substituting for other skulls, it can blow up the symbols around it, which clears space for another drop and can keep a chain going. The rules page sets out exactly which symbols it removes and how it interacts with the multiplier.
Esqueleto Explosivo RTP and low volatility explained
Our checked data lists the RTP at 96.0%. We have not re-verified that figure against a second source, and casinos may run other versions, so check the rules page before playing. At 96.0%, the long-run average cost is 4p for every £1 staked.

Low volatility is the other half of the picture. Returns are spread across many small and medium wins rather than saved up for rare large ones, so a session tends to move up and down gently. That is useful if you want a predictable pace, but it also explains the modest ceiling: a game can’t be both low volatility and capable of a 50,000× hit. Our low volatility slot machines page lists other games built this way.
Esqueleto Explosivo max win: 700× at UK stakes
The maximum win is 700 times the stake. That is small by modern standards, and it is the honest trade-off for low volatility.

Under the Gambling Commission’s stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab), the highest stake a player aged 18 to 24 can use is £2, and the highest for anyone 25 or over is £5. For comparison, the top prize on a pub Category C machine is £100 from a £1 stake, so the two products work on very different scales.
What an hour of Esqueleto Explosivo costs
Low volatility makes the long-run average a slightly better guide to a session than it is on a high-volatility game, though it is still only an average. The minimum 2.5-second game cycle caps play at 1,440 spins an hour.

The sequel keeps the skeleton band and the doubling idea but moves to medium volatility and a far higher cap. Gonzo’s Quest is the best-known rival with falling symbols and a climbing multiplier, while Starburst is the classic low-volatility alternative. For other Thunderkick games, see Birds on a Wire.
Is Esqueleto Explosivo worth playing? Who it suits
Advantages
Low volatility gives a steadier session
One clear mechanic that is easy to follow
Doubling multiplier makes chains meaningful
Small stakes go a long way
Drawbacks
700× ceiling is low
No separate bonus round for players who like features
RTP figure not re-verified; check the help screen
Older game; the sequel offers more variety
It suits adults on a small budget who prefer a long, even session to a shot at a large prize. If you want a bigger range of outcomes, the sequel or a medium volatility slot is a better match.
Esqueleto Explosivo myths and facts
“A long chain means the next spin will be quiet.” Every spin is independent. The multiplier resets because the rules say so, not because the game is balancing itself.
“The multiplier carries over if you spin fast.” It resets at the end of each spin’s chain, whatever the timing; see does the speed of spinning matter.
“Low volatility means you can’t lose much.” Losses are smaller and steadier on average, but the house edge still applies to every spin.
“Skull symbols near the top are about to drop into a win.” What drops next is already part of the drawn result.

Chains of falling symbols have to fit inside the British design rules. Since 31 October 2021 the Commission’s rules on online game design (opens in a new tab) have banned autoplay, turbo and slam-stop and set a 2.5-second minimum between spins. They also stop a game celebrating a result that returns no more than the stake; on a cascade game that matters, because a chain of small wins can still add up to less than you staked.
The game also shows your net position for the session, so you can see at a glance whether you are up or down overall. Stake limits of £5 (25 and over) and £2 (18 to 24) apply, as covered on our UK slot machine rules page.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Esqueleto Explosivo?
Our checked data lists Esqueleto Explosivo at 96.0% RTP, though we have not been able to re-verify that against a second source. Casinos can be supplied with different versions, so the rules page in the game is the place to confirm the figure you are playing. At 96.0%, the long-run average cost is £4 for every £100 staked, but any session can finish well above or below that. Read are high RTP slots better for what the percentage does and does not tell you.
What is the max win on Esqueleto Explosivo?
The maximum win is 700 times your stake. At 10p that is £70, at £1 it is £700, at the £2 limit for 18 to 24-year-olds it is £1,400 and at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over it is £3,500. The low ceiling goes hand in hand with the game’s low volatility, which spreads returns across many smaller wins. Our max win caps page explains how these limits are set.
How does the Esqueleto Explosivo multiplier work?
The multiplier starts at 1× on each spin and doubles every time a new win follows an explosion in the same chain: 1×, 2×, 4×, 8×, 16× and finally 32×. When a drop produces no win, the chain ends and the multiplier resets for the next spin. A small win landing late in a long chain can therefore be worth many times its paytable value, although most chains end early. Our multipliers guide explains other ways slots use them.
Does Esqueleto Explosivo have free spins?
The original Esqueleto Explosivo is built around its base-game chain of exploding wins and doubling multipliers rather than a separate free spins round. That keeps the game simple and the volatility low. If a casino’s version lists any additional feature, it will appear in the rules page. The sequel, Esqueleto Explosivo 2, adds more features and higher volatility. For how free spins rounds work in other slots, see the free spins feature.
Is Esqueleto Explosivo a low volatility slot?
Yes, it is rated low volatility. Returns are spread across frequent smaller wins rather than concentrated in rare large ones, so your balance usually moves gently. It still has a house edge, so over time losses are likely. Low volatility simply makes the path smoother, and it is why the maximum win is only 700 times the stake. The volatility explainer compares low, medium and high games with worked examples.
Can I play Esqueleto Explosivo for free?
Free demo play is available after age verification at UK-licensed casinos that list the game. Operators have had to verify age before allowing free-to-play games since May 2019, so you will need to register first. The demo uses the same maths as the real version and is a fair way to see how the chain and multiplier behave. Credits in a demo have no cash value. Our free slot machines page explains demo rules in more detail.
How does Esqueleto Explosivo 2 differ from the original?
The sequel keeps the skeleton band and the exploding-chain idea but changes the maths. Esqueleto Explosivo 2 has 99 pay ways, medium volatility, a listed 96.13% RTP and a 5,000× max win, while the original has 17 paylines, low volatility, 96.0% and 700×. In short, the first game is steadier and the second has a wider range of outcomes. Our Esqueleto Explosivo 2 page covers the sequel in full.
Who makes Esqueleto Explosivo?
Esqueleto Explosivo is made by Thunderkick, a Swedish studio founded in 2012 and based in Stockholm. It is independent, makes no branded games and distributes through Relax Gaming’s partner programme. Thunderkick holds Gambling Commission accounts 40165 and 41752, which allow British casinos to offer its games. Its other titles include Pink Elephants 2 and Birds on a Wire. See our Thunderkick page for more.
Does stopping the reels change the result on Esqueleto Explosivo?
No. The outcome of the whole spin, including every drop in the chain, is set by the random number generator when you press spin. In any case, UK rules since October 2021 ban slam-stop features that cut the animation short on online slots. Tapping, waiting or changing the speed has no effect on what lands. Our page on whether stopping the reels is a skill explains why, including how this differs from pub fruit machines.
What is the maximum bet on Esqueleto Explosivo in the UK?
If you are 25 or over the maximum is £5 per spin, and if you are 18 to 24 it is £2 per spin. These limits apply to all online slots at British-licensed casinos, from 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025 respectively. On a low-volatility game with a 700× cap, a £5 stake can win at most £3,500. Our online slot stake limits page explains how age checks set the right limit.
