The Wolf Run slot is IGT’s 40-line, five-reel, four-row game with a 94.98% RTP, low to medium volatility and stacked wolf wilds that can cover whole reels. It started life as a land-based casino cabinet before IGT released the online version in 2014. Here is how its reels, free spins and maths work for UK players.
Wolf Run pays on 40 lines across a 5 × 4 grid, with stacked wilds as its main engine.
Its 94.98% RTP is lower than many newer slots, so it costs more per £100 staked on average.
Low to medium volatility means more frequent, smaller returns than feature-heavy games.
Three bonus symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4 start the free spins, which can be retriggered.
IGT publishes no max win multiple, so check the paytable rather than trusting quoted figures.

Wolf Run slot at a glance
Wolf Run comes from IGT, the Las Vegas company better known for land-based cabinets than for online studios. It is a plain, almost old-fashioned design: a moonlit forest, four rows instead of the usual three, 40 fixed lines and wild wolves that arrive in tall stacks. There are no cascading reels, no ways grid and no multiplier ladders. What makes it popular is that the stacked wilds can turn an ordinary spin into a many-line win.
IGT’s history on Wikipedia (opens in a new tab) shows a company that has built casino machines since the 1970s and is now owned by Apollo-managed funds, combined with Everi. Wolf Run belongs to the generation of IGT video reels that were designed for casino floors first, which is why its maths feels closer to a cabinet than to a modern feature-led online game.

How the Wolf Run slot machine pays across 40 lines
Each of Wolf Run’s 40 paylines is a fixed route through the four rows. A win needs at least three matching symbols on one line, starting from the leftmost reel. Because four rows give more possible routes than three, IGT could fit 40 lines without making them overlap too heavily.
Choose your total bet; the stake is spread across all 40 lines.
The game’s random number generator picks a stop on each of the five reel strips.
The 20 visible symbols are checked against every line pattern.
Wilds substitute for any symbol except the bonus symbol, completing lines.
Each line pays its own prize from the paytable, and all line wins are added together.
If three bonus symbols sit on reels 2, 3 and 4, the free spins feature starts.
Line wins in a slot like this are quoted as a multiple of the line bet, not the total bet. On a 40-line game a line prize of 10 times the line bet equals a quarter of your total stake. That is why many small Wolf Run wins return less than you staked, and why the UK rule on losses disguised as wins stops the game celebrating them.
Wolf Run stacked wilds: the main feature
The howling wolf is the wild symbol, and it appears in stacks on the reel strips. A stack is a run of the same symbol placed one above another on the strip, so when a stack lands it can fill all four rows of a reel. With every row wild on a reel, every one of the 40 lines passing through that reel gets a substitute at the same time.
Why stacks change the maths
Suppose the wolf stack covers reels 2 and 3 entirely, and reel 1 shows a high-paying symbol in two rows. Each line that starts on one of those two symbols and continues through the wild reels already has three of a kind. If reel 4 also shows that symbol on some of those lines, several four-of-a-kind wins pay at once. This is exactly how stacked wilds and stacked symbols push volatility up a notch: they are rare, but when they line up they hit many lines together.
The paying symbols can also land in stacks. Large wins usually come from stacked wilds lining up with stacked high-pay symbols on adjacent reels.
Wolf Run free spins bonus and retriggers
The Wolf Run bonus is a classic free spins round. Three bonus symbols landing anywhere on the middle three reels (2, 3 and 4) trigger it. Published game descriptions say the trigger also pays a small prize of twice the total bet before the spins start, and that the round begins with five free spins.

Five spins sounds small, and often it is. The round becomes valuable through retriggers, which keep adding spins when the bonus symbols land again. Most rounds end without a retrigger, so treat a long run of free spins as the exception. IGT’s help screen inside the game is the place to confirm the exact rules for the version you are playing.
Wolf Run RTP and volatility explained
The Wolf Run RTP is 94.98%, which puts the house edge at 5.02%. That is noticeably lower than many modern online slots, which often sit around 96%. Over 1,000 spins at £1, the difference between 94.98% and 96% is about £10 of extra average cost, which shows why the RTP figure is worth checking.
Its low to medium volatility softens that cost in a different way. Returns come more often and in smaller amounts, so a fixed budget tends to last longer than on a high-volatility game, even though the long-run cost per spin is higher. The guide to low volatility slot machines explains the trade-off.

Wolf Run max win: what is and isn’t published
IGT does not publish a Wolf Run max win as a multiple of the total stake, so we do not state one. Figures you may see quoted elsewhere are usually line prizes multiplied out, or estimates, and they are not on the developer’s game sheet. The reliable way to find the top prize is the paytable in the game you are playing, which shows the line payouts in pounds once you set a stake.
Wolf Run was a land-based casino game before it moved online. In Great Britain, a game with stakes and prizes like that would only appear on a Category B machine, and casino floors hold the highest of them, Category B1, with a £5 maximum stake and a £10,000 maximum prize (or £20,000 on a linked progressive). Online slots are not in the machine categories at all; they follow the remote rules instead.
The online conversion kept the cabinet’s feel: four rows, a single free spins feature and wilds doing the heavy lifting. If you have played an IGT cabinet in a UK casino, the online game will feel familiar, though the RTP and stake settings can differ between the two. Our comparison of online and land-based slots explains why the same title can have different maths in each setting.
UK rules that apply to the Wolf Run slot
No autoplay: UK players press spin each time, under the autoplay ban in force since 31 October 2021.
2.5 seconds per spin: the minimum game cycle means no more than 1,440 spins an hour.
No turbo or slam-stop: pressing a button cannot speed up or stop the reels.
No bonus buy: UK versions are supplied without a paid route into the free spins.
Net position on screen: you can always see your balance and how much you are up or down.
Low to medium volatility suits longer, steadier sessions
Stacked wilds can hit many lines at once
A familiar casino-floor style
Drawbacks
94.98% RTP is below many modern slots
Only five free spins to start
No published max win multiple
Dated graphics compared with newer games
Wolf Run suits adults who like classic video reels and want a session that moves at a steady pace rather than one built around a single rare feature. If you care most about the long-run cost, a high RTP slot will usually cost less per £100 staked.
Games like Wolf Run
The obvious comparison is Wolf Gold by Pragmatic Play, which shares the wolf theme but uses a 5 × 3 grid, 25 lines, medium volatility, a 96.01% RTP and a Money Respin with fixed jackpots. Within IGT’s own range, Siberian Storm uses a 720-ways layout that pays both directions, and Cleopatra is the studio’s other long-running casino conversion. Wolf Run demo and how to check the RTP
Verify your age with the casino; UK sites can only offer demo play after that check.
Open Wolf Run in demo mode if the casino offers it, or in real-money mode.
Tap the menu or information icon and open the rules.
Find the theoretical return; it should read 94.98% if the casino uses the standard setting.
Read the paytable at your chosen stake to see real pound prizes.
A Wolf Run demo uses play money, so it costs nothing and pays nothing, but UK rules require its outcomes to behave like the real game. More on that in our page on whether free slot games match real ones.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Wolf Run?
Wolf Run has an RTP of 94.98%, which means it is designed to return about £94.98 for every £100 staked over many millions of spins. The house edge is therefore 5.02%, higher than on many modern online slots that sit around 96%. In a single session you could finish well above or below that average. Some operators may run another setting, so check the game’s rules screen. Our guide to what a good RTP is puts the figure in context, and house edge explains the maths.
How do you trigger the Wolf Run free spins?
You trigger Wolf Run free spins by landing three bonus symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4 in the same spin. The round starts with five free spins at your triggering stake, and landing three more bonus symbols during the round adds further spins. Published descriptions mention a ceiling of 255 spins in one round, though most rounds end long before that. The trigger is random on every spin. The explainer on what triggers a bonus round explains why no pattern predicts it.
What is the Wolf Run max win?
IGT does not publish a Wolf Run max win as a multiple of the stake, so we do not quote one. Figures elsewhere tend to be estimates or line prizes multiplied out. The most accurate way to see the top prize is the paytable inside the game, which shows each symbol’s payout in pounds at your chosen stake. Big wins come from stacked wilds lining up with high-paying symbols across many of the 40 lines. Our explainer on slot max win caps covers how top prizes are set.
Is Wolf Run a high volatility slot?
No, Wolf Run is rated low to medium volatility. That means it tends to pay smaller amounts more often rather than saving most of its return for one rare feature. A budget usually lasts longer than on a high-volatility game, even though the 94.98% RTP makes the long-run average cost per spin higher than on many newer slots. Volatility describes how results spread, not how much you will lose on average. Read more in our explainer on slot volatility.
How many paylines does Wolf Run have?
Wolf Run has 40 paylines on a five-reel, four-row grid. Each line is a fixed route across the reels, and a win needs at least three matching symbols on a line starting from the leftmost reel. Because there are four rows, a stack of wilds covering one reel completes part of every line that passes through it. In UK versions the lines are fixed, so you set a total stake rather than choosing how many lines to play. Our guide to paylines explains lines in detail.
Was Wolf Run a land-based slot machine first?
Yes, Wolf Run began as an IGT land-based casino game and moved online in 2014. In Britain, a game with casino-level stakes would only appear on Category B machines, and the highest of those, Category B1, has a £5 maximum stake and a £10,000 maximum prize. The online version follows remote gambling rules instead, so its stake limits and design rules differ. Our page on UK slot machine categories and our IGT provider page give more background.
Can I play Wolf Run for free?
You can play Wolf Run in demo mode where a UK casino offers it, but only after the casino has verified your age, which has been required since May 2019. Demo play uses play money: it costs nothing and you cannot win real prizes. The game must behave the same way as the real-money version, so it is a fair way to see the stacked wilds and free spins in action. The guide to free slot machines covers the rules for UK players.
How much does Wolf Run cost per 100 spins?
At 94.98% RTP, 100 spins at £1 cost about £5.02 on average, from £100 staked. At 20p a spin the average cost is about £1.00, at £2 about £10.04, and at £5 about £25.10. These are long-run averages, and any real session can come out higher or lower. Because Wolf Run’s volatility is low to medium, real results tend to stay closer to the average than on a high-volatility game. Our slot cost calculator works out other stakes and spin counts.
Is Wolf Run like Wolf Gold?
Wolf Run and Wolf Gold share a wolf theme but are different games from different studios. Wolf Run is IGT’s 40-line, 5 × 4 slot with a 94.98% RTP, low to medium volatility and a free spins bonus. Wolf Gold is Pragmatic Play’s 25-line, 5 × 3 game with a 96.01% RTP, medium volatility and a Money Respin feature with fixed jackpots. Wolf Gold’s higher RTP means a lower average cost per spin. See our Wolf Gold page for its full breakdown.
Does stopping the reels early help on Wolf Run?
No, and UK versions do not allow it. Since 31 October 2021, slam-stop and turbo features have been banned on online slots in Great Britain, and each spin must take at least 2.5 seconds. Even where stopping was allowed, it never changed anything: the result is chosen by the random number generator before the reels start to move. The article on whether stopping the reels is a skill explains why the animation is only a display of an outcome already set.
