The Nitropolis slot is a 6-reel, 4-row ELK Studios game from 2020 that starts each spin on 4,096 ways and can stretch to 85,155,840 when its Nitro Reels land. It returns 96.1% over the long run, sits in the medium–high volatility band and caps wins at 10,000x the stake. Here is how every part of it works.
Nitropolis runs on 4,096 ways that Nitro Reels can push up to 85,155,840.
RTP is 96.1%, so 100 spins at 20p cost 78p on average over the very long run.
Free spins come from 3 to 6 scatters and make every Nitro Reel sticky for the round.
The top prize is 10,000x the stake: £20,000 at the £2 limit for 18–24s.
In Britain there is no autoplay, no feature buy and each spin lasts at least 2.5 seconds.

What is the Nitropolis slot?
Nitropolis is a video slot from Swedish studio ELK Studios, released in 2020. Its theme is a neon, dystopian city, but the part that matters to your money is the reel set: six reels of four symbols each, paying on ways to win rather than fixed lines. Any matching symbols on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel form a win, so there is no line pattern to learn.
What sets the game apart is a block that can drop onto any reel. ELK calls it a Nitro Reel. It takes up two rows on screen but holds far more symbols than two, and that is how a 4,096-way game reaches a theoretical 85,155,840 ways. The rest of this page goes through that mechanic, the respins, the free spins feature, the maths behind the 96.1% return and how British rules shape the version you see in the UK.

How the Nitropolis slot machine works, spin by spin
Every online slot works on the same principle: a random number generator picks the result on the game server the moment you press spin, and the animation simply shows you what was decided. Nitropolis is no different. The reel spin, the Nitro Reels dropping in and the respins that follow are all presentation of an outcome that was fixed before the first reel moved.
Choose your total stake. In Britain the game will not accept more than £5 a spin if you are 25 or over, or £2 if you are 18 to 24.
Press spin. The server draws the result and the six reels land with four symbols each, giving 4,096 possible ways.
If a Nitro Reel lands, a framed block appears on one reel, with a number above it showing how many matching symbols it counts as.
The game totals every way that runs from reel 1 rightwards with at least three matching symbols, multiplying the symbol counts on each reel.
Any win starts a respin. New wins keep the respin sequence going, and a Nitro Reel can be upgraded between respins.
When no further win lands, the sequence ends, the total is added to your balance and the next spin can start, no sooner than 2.5 seconds after the last.
That last point is a UK requirement rather than a design choice. The Gambling Commission's rules on online game design (opens in a new tab) set a minimum game cycle and ban features that speed play up, which is why the British build feels a little more measured than footage from other markets.
Nitro Reels: how Nitropolis reaches 85 million ways
A Nitro Reel is a two-row block wrapped in green pipework. It can land on any of the six reels. The number shown above the frame says how many identical symbols the block contains, and the published steps are 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12. Because ways are calculated by multiplying how many matching symbols sit on each reel, a single block worth 12 changes the arithmetic enormously.
A worked ways example
The illustration below shows the principle, not the exact screen geometry. Suppose the spin shows two neon-cat symbols on reel 1, one on reel 2 and a Nitro Reel worth 8 cats on reel 3. The number of winning ways for that three-reel cat combination is 2 × 1 × 8 = 16. Without the Nitro Reel, with one cat on reel 3, it would have been 2 × 1 × 1 = 2. Each way pays the paytable value for three cats, so the block has multiplied that win eightfold.

There is also a second-chance mechanic: a Nitro Reel can spin again to show a different symbol, which matters when the first symbol inside it fails to connect with anything on the reels to its left. The headline 85,155,840 figure is simply what happens when large Nitro Reels sit across the whole grid. It is a ceiling, not something to expect, and the max win cap of 10,000x applies whatever the ways count reaches.
Winning respins in the Nitropolis base game
Most wins in Nitropolis do not end the spin. A win triggers a respin, and the sequence carries on for as long as each respin produces another winning combination. During those respins a Nitro Reel already on the grid can be upgraded, for example from a 4 to a 6, which feeds bigger ways counts into the next result.
It is tempting to read a long respin chain as the game "warming up". It is not. The whole chain, including how far it goes, is part of the result the RNG drew when you pressed spin. Respins are free in the sense that they cost no extra stake, because they belong to the same paid spin. They do not change the 96.1% return; that figure already includes everything respins pay.
Respin chains are part of why the game is rated medium–high volatility: many spins pay nothing, while a few long chains with upgraded Nitro Reels carry a large share of the total return.
Nitropolis free spins bonus explained
The bonus is triggered by scatter symbols landing anywhere on the reels. Three, four, five or six scatters award 10, 15, 20 or 25 free spins, and landing the scatters again during the round adds more. The free spins are played at the stake of the spin that triggered them.
What changes in the bonus
A scatter-paying symbol. Before the round starts, one ordinary symbol is picked at random. For the rest of the bonus it also pays anywhere on screen, as long as at least three of it land.
Sticky Nitro Reels. Any Nitro Reel that lands stays locked in place for the rest of the round, so ways counts build up rather than resetting each spin. That is the same idea as other sticky symbols.
Upgrades carry on. Respins and further spins can still upgrade a Nitro Reel's count, so a block that arrives as a 4 can grow during the round.
Put together, a bonus that collects several sticky Nitro Reels early is where most of the game's largest results come from. A bonus that collects none can pay very little. Both are normal. How often the round triggers is not published by ELK, so treat any figure you see quoted elsewhere with caution.
Nitropolis RTP and volatility: what 96.1% costs
The Nitropolis RTP is 96.1%. Return to player is a long-run average across millions of spins, so the other 3.9% is the house edge. The table turns that into money per 100 spins. Real sessions swing far more than these averages suggest, especially on a medium–high volatility game.

Volatility describes how that return is spread. ELK's game sits in the medium–high band: smaller wins appear regularly through the respin feature, but a big part of the 96.1% is held back for bonuses with sticky Nitro Reels. Over 100 spins at 20p you could lose most of the £20 or finish ahead; the 78p average only describes the very long run. Our volatility guide explains why the range is so wide.
Some operators can choose lower RTP settings for games from many studios. Always confirm the figure in the help screen of the version you are playing.
Nitropolis max win at UK stake limits
The Nitropolis max win is 10,000 times the total stake. When a spin or bonus reaches that figure the game stops paying further and ends the round. The table shows what the cap means at common stakes, including the two UK limits.

The cap is a ceiling that very few spins ever approach. ELK does not publish the probability of hitting it, and nothing about your stake size changes the odds of a given result per spin; it only scales the prize. A £5 stake reaches £50,000 at the cap, but it also costs 25 times as much per spin as 20p.
Is the Nitropolis slot worth playing?
Whether Nitropolis suits you depends on how you like a session to feel, not on any edge, because there is none to find. The return is set by the maths model and stays the same whichever way you play.
Advantages
Respins mean many paying spins continue rather than stopping at one win
Nitro Reels give the base game real variety from spin to spin
A 96.1% RTP is in line with typical modern video slots
Sticky Nitro Reels make the free spins round build up as it goes
Drawbacks
Medium–high volatility means long runs without much return are normal
The ways system is harder to follow than a simple payline game
Most of the top-end potential sits inside a bonus that may take a long time to arrive
Lower-RTP settings may exist at some casinos
If you prefer steadier, smaller returns, a lower-volatility classic such as Starburst behaves very differently. If you like games where the grid itself changes, Nitropolis is a good example of the genre, and our guide on how to choose a slot machine covers the trade-offs in more detail.
Nitropolis myths and facts
Common Nitropolis slot myths
Myth
Fact
A long run without Nitro Reels means one is due.
Each spin is independent. The RNG has no memory, so no feature is ever due.
More ways means a higher RTP.
The return is fixed at 96.1% whatever the ways count. Ways describe how wins form, not how much the game pays back.
Raising the stake after losses improves the odds.
Stake size scales wins and losses equally. It never changes the chance of any result.
The demo pays better than the real game.
Licensed demos must use the same maths. A demo session can look generous by chance, just as a real one can.
Some casinos have a 'hot' Nitropolis.
There is no such thing. The only setting that differs between sites is the RTP version, which the help screen shows.
The figure that counts is the one inside the game you open, because that is the version your casino runs. Checking takes under a minute.
Open Nitropolis at a UK-licensed casino and verify your age if asked.
Tap the menu or 'i' icon to open the game rules.
Scroll to the section headed return to player or theoretical RTP.
Compare the figure with the 96.1% standard setting. If it is lower, the casino uses a lower-RTP version.
Read the scatter and Nitro Reel rules while you are there, as they confirm the spin awards in that version.
A Nitropolis demo, where offered, is free demo play after age verification: since May 2019 licensed sites must confirm you are 18 or over before letting you play even without money. Our demo slots guide and guide to finding a slot's RTP explain both steps in more detail.
UK rules that shape the British Nitropolis
The version available to players in Great Britain differs from overseas builds in a few ways, all down to Gambling Commission rules or how games are supplied here.
No autoplay and a 2.5-second minimum. Both have applied since 31 October 2021; see our page on the autoplay ban.
No celebration of losses. A respin chain that returns less than the stake cannot be dressed up as a win.
No feature buy. ELK's X-iter menu, which lets players pay to enter features in some markets, is not part of the games supplied to British players. Our page on bonus buys in the UK explains the position.
ELK followed the original with several Nitropolis sequels, which reuse the Nitro Reel idea with changes to the bonus. If you like the original, check the studio's catalogue at your casino. Within our own library, these games share part of the appeal.
All of these appear in the main slots library, where you can compare RTP, volatility and caps side by side.
Where to play the Nitropolis slot in the UK
Nitropolis is supplied to UK-licensed casinos, but game libraries change, so search the lobby of any casino you use; game availability changes and we cannot promise a particular site carries it. The offers shown below are for slots generally rather than this game. Coral's offer gives 100 free spins at 10p each after you deposit and bet £10 on slots, and Ladbrokes' gives up to 500 free spins at 10p over ten days after you spend £10 on slots; both carry no wagering on spin winnings. PlayOJO's 80 no-wagering spins are played on Big Bass Bonanza, not Nitropolis.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of the Nitropolis slot?
The standard Nitropolis RTP is 96.1%, meaning the game is designed to return £96.10 for every £100 staked across millions of spins. That leaves a house edge of 3.9%. The figure is an average for the whole game, including respins and free spins, and says nothing reliable about a single session, which can land far above or below it. Some casinos may run a lower setting, so open the rules screen inside the game to see the version you are playing. Our RTP explainer shows how the percentage is calculated.
What is the Nitropolis max win?
The Nitropolis max win is 10,000 times your total stake. At a 20p stake that is £2,000, at £1 it is £10,000, and at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over it is £50,000. For 18–24s, who can stake no more than £2, the ceiling is £20,000. Once a spin or bonus reaches the cap, the game ends that round and pays the capped amount. ELK does not publish how often the cap is reached, and it is extremely rare. See our page on max win caps for how these limits work.
How do you trigger Nitropolis free spins?
You trigger Nitropolis free spins by landing three or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels in one spin. Three scatters award 10 free spins, four give 15, five give 20 and six give 25, and further scatters during the round add more spins. Before the bonus begins, one regular symbol is chosen to pay anywhere as a scatter, and any Nitro Reel that lands stays sticky until the round ends. There is no way to raise your chance of triggering it, since every spin is random. Our free spins feature page explains how bonus rounds are built.
What is a Nitro Reel?
A Nitro Reel is a two-row block that can land on any reel of Nitropolis and counts as several identical symbols at once. The number above the block, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12, tells you how many matching symbols it holds. Because ways wins multiply the number of matching symbols on each reel, one block can multiply a win many times. A Nitro Reel can be upgraded during respins and becomes sticky in free spins. The mechanic is similar in spirit to xWays symbols, which also expand the number of ways.
Is there a Nitropolis demo in the UK?
Yes, many UK-licensed casinos offer Nitropolis in demo mode, but it is free demo play after age verification rather than open access. Since May 2019 operators must confirm you are 18 or over before you can use any free-to-play version. The demo runs the same maths model as the real game, so it is a fair way to see how Nitro Reels and respins behave. A good demo run is still pure chance and predicts nothing about real-money results. Our guide to demo slots covers where and how to use them.
Is Nitropolis high volatility?
Nitropolis is rated medium–high volatility, which sits between steady games and the most extreme modern releases. In practice this means plenty of spins return nothing, respin chains provide a fair number of small and medium wins, and the largest payouts are concentrated in free spins with several sticky Nitro Reels. Budgets need to allow for long quiet patches. If you want something calmer, look at low volatility slot machines; if you want even wider swings, see our high volatility slots page.
Can I buy the Nitropolis bonus in the UK?
No, you cannot buy the Nitropolis bonus at UK-licensed casinos. ELK's X-iter menu, which lets players in some countries pay a set multiple of the stake to enter a feature, is not offered in games supplied to Great Britain. That is a matter of how studios supply the British market rather than a single dated Commission rule. The only way to reach the free spins in the UK is to land the scatters naturally. Our page on bonus buy in the UK explains the background.
How much does Nitropolis cost to play per hour?
There is no fixed hourly cost, but you can estimate it from the RTP and your spin rate. UK rules mean each spin lasts at least 2.5 seconds, and respins make many spins longer. If you managed 600 spins in an hour at 20p, you would stake £120, and the 3.9% house edge points to an average cost of about £4.68. Real results vary widely around that figure. Our cost per hour guide and slot cost calculator let you run your own numbers.
Who makes the Nitropolis slot machine?
Nitropolis is made by ELK Studios, a Stockholm studio founded in 2013 that holds a Gambling Commission licence under account 40844. ELK is known for avalanche-style mechanics, walking wilds and its X-iter feature menu, which is not part of British versions. The studio also makes the Pirots series and Cygnus, and it has released several Nitropolis follow-ups. You can read more about its history and best-known games on our ELK Studios provider page.
Does stopping the reels early change a Nitropolis result?
No. Online slots in Britain cannot offer slam-stop at all since 31 October 2021, and even where stopping exists it changes nothing, because the RNG has already chosen the outcome before the reels appear to spin. The same applies to Nitro Reels and respins: their arrival is part of a result that was fixed when you pressed spin. Our answer on whether you can stop a slot spin early explains the technical side.
