Cygnus slot at a glance
Cygnus, named after the swan constellation, is a six-reel online slot from Swedish studio ELK Studios. It pays on 'ways' rather than lines: any matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left form a win, whatever row they sit in. What makes it different is that the grid isn't fixed. It starts four rows high and gets taller every time a win continues into another avalanche.
That single rule drives almost everything else about the game, from how wins chain together to why the volatility is rated medium–high. The rest of this page takes it apart step by step.
How the Cygnus slot machine grows its reels
Cygnus combines two mechanics. The first is cascading reels, which ELK calls avalanches: when a spin wins, the winning symbols are removed and new ones drop in from above, which can form a fresh win at no extra cost. The second is expanding reels: each avalanche adds a row to every reel, so the next drop happens on a bigger grid.
You press spin; the RNG sets the symbols on a 6 × 4 grid (4,096 ways).
If there's a win, it is paid and the winning symbols disappear.
All six reels gain a row, and new symbols fall into the gaps.
The game checks the larger grid for wins; any new win repeats the process.
Growth stops at 8 rows; the chain ends when an avalanche produces no win, and the next paid spin starts again at 4 rows.
The ways count is simply rows multiplied across six reels: rows to the power of six. That's why each extra row has such a large effect.

Going from four rows to five nearly quadruples the ways, and the full eight-row grid has 64 times as many ways as the starting grid. More ways don't make each symbol more valuable, but they make it far likelier that the newly dropped symbols connect, which is how long chains form. Our page on 1024 ways slots shows the same multiplication on a smaller scale.

In this example the spin returned £2.10 for a £1 stake from a modest start. Most chains are shorter than that, and plenty of spins pay nothing at all; the example only shows how a small first win can grow. To read the real symbol values, open the paytable inside the game, where they're shown in pounds for your current stake. Our paytable guide explains the layout.
Cygnus free spins and bonus features
The bonus round is triggered by landing the game's scatter symbols during a spin or an avalanche chain. Inside the free spins, the growing-reel mechanic continues, and the help screen explains any rules that change in the bonus, such as how many rows each free spin starts with and how retriggers work. Because those details are specific to the version you open, read them there rather than relying on summaries.
The wild symbol substitutes for the regular paying symbols, and on a tall grid one wild can sit on a huge number of ways at once. That's another reason the biggest results tend to arrive late in long chains, when the grid is at or near eight rows.
Outside Great Britain, ELK games often include extra buttons for buying the bonus or running automated betting patterns. Neither is offered in the UK: there is no feature buy on slots supplied here, and autoplay has been banned since 31 October 2021.
Cygnus RTP and what 96.1% costs you
ELK lists Cygnus at 96.1% RTP. Across all players and millions of spins, the game is designed to keep 3.9% of everything staked. For any one player in any one session, the result can be anywhere from losing the whole budget to finishing well ahead.
Cygnus sits between the steadier games and the very spiky ones. Short avalanche chains give frequent small returns, while the long chains that reach seven or eight rows are where the bigger results come from. Those long chains are uncommon, so a session can go a long time between them.
The Cygnus max win is 5,000x your stake. The game ends a spin's winnings at that cap if it is reached. The table shows what that means at stakes allowed in Great Britain.

The £2 and £5 rows reflect the online stake limits: £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over since 9 April 2025, and £2 for those aged 18 to 24 since 21 May 2025, as explained in the Gambling Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). Reaching the cap is very rare; it's the ceiling, not a target. See max win caps for how caps are applied.
How UK rules change the Cygnus slot
Since 31 October 2021, online slots in Great Britain have had to slow down and show more. The Commission's online games design consultation response (opens in a new tab) sets out the reasons. For Cygnus, the visible effects are that each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds, there is no autoplay or turbo, and a 'win' that returns less than or the same as your stake isn't celebrated.
Avalanches still play out within one game cycle, so a long chain takes longer to animate, but it is all one result decided when you pressed spin. Stopping the animation early, where allowed, would not change it. Read more on whether stopping the reels is a skill.
Playing the Cygnus demo
Free demo play of Cygnus, after age verification, is available at UK-licensed sites that host the game. It's the easiest way to watch the grid climb from four to eight rows and to see how often chains stop at the first avalanche. Just remember the demo can't show you the long-run picture in a few hundred spins. Our demo slots guide explains the limits.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Cygnus?
Cygnus has an RTP of 96.1%, according to ELK Studios. Over a very large number of spins the game returns an average of £96.10 for every £100 staked, keeping £3.90. That figure says nothing reliable about a single session, which can end well below or above it. Check the help screen when you open the game, as that shows the percentage for the exact version the casino runs. Our RTP explainer covers how the figure is calculated and tested.
How many ways to win does Cygnus have?
Cygnus starts every spin with 4,096 ways and can grow to 262,144. The number is the rows on each reel multiplied across all six reels, so four rows gives 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 4,096 and eight rows gives 262,144. Each winning avalanche adds one row, so five rows means 15,625 ways and six rows 46,656. The height resets at the start of the next paid spin. See expanding reels for more on the mechanic.
What is the max win on Cygnus?
The maximum win on Cygnus is 5,000 times your stake. At 10p that's £500, at £1 it's £5,000, at the £2 limit for 18 to 24-year-olds it's £10,000, and at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over it's £25,000. A spin's winnings stop at the cap if it is reached. Very few spins come anywhere near it, so treat it as a ceiling rather than an expectation. Casinos can set their own payout limits too, so read the terms. See max win caps.
How do Cygnus free spins work?
Cygnus free spins are triggered by landing the scatter symbols, and during the round the growing-reel mechanic carries on, so long avalanche chains can build the grid up to eight rows. The help screen in your version explains the details, including how many free spins are given, the starting height and how retriggers work. The free spins' value is already included in the 96.1% RTP; they aren't extra money from the casino. Read how free spins work on slot machines for the general idea.
Is Cygnus high volatility?
Cygnus is rated medium–high volatility. It's not as spiky as the most extreme slots, but its larger wins depend on long avalanche chains that don't come often. Expect many spins that pay nothing or a small amount, with occasional chains that build the grid and pay much more. Volatility describes how results are spread, not how much the game costs over time; that depends on RTP. Our volatility page explains the difference.
Can I buy the bonus on Cygnus in the UK?
No. Versions of Cygnus offered at UK-licensed casinos don't include a bonus buy, even though some international versions of ELK games do. Slots supplied to Great Britain simply aren't built with that option, so the only way into the free spins is to trigger them on a normal spin. That keeps the cost of each spin within the UK stake limits of £5 (25 and over) or £2 (18 to 24). Our page on bonus buy in the UK explains the background.
Can I play Cygnus for free?
Yes, as free demo play after age verification at a UK-licensed site that offers the game. Licensed operators haven't been allowed to offer free-to-play versions to unverified users since May 2019. The demo runs the same maths as the real version, so it shows how the avalanches and growing grid behave. It can't predict how a real-money session will go, because a short run tells you little about a medium–high volatility game. See are free slot games the same as real ones.
Who makes the Cygnus slot?
Cygnus was made by ELK Studios, a Swedish developer, and released in 2019. ELK is known for mechanics that change the grid during a spin, and Cygnus is one of its clearest examples, with reels that grow a row on each winning avalanche. The studio's other games on our site include Nitropolis, Wild Toro and the Pirots series. Read about the company, its maths habits and its best-known titles on our ELK Studios page.
Does the grid stay big between spins on Cygnus?
No. In the base game, every new paid spin starts on the four-row grid with 4,096 ways, however tall the grid got on the previous spin. Extra rows only appear through avalanches within a spin. That means a long chain on one spin gives no advantage on the next, and there is no point continuing to play because the grid was recently large. Each spin's result is set by the RNG when you press the button. See do slot machines remember past spins.
How long does £50 last on Cygnus?
It depends on stake and luck, but you can estimate the average. At 50p a spin, £50 buys 100 spins, and at 96.1% RTP the long-run average cost of those spins is £1.95. If you recycle winnings you'll often play longer than 100 spins, but a cold run can use the £50 much sooner. Medium–high volatility means both outcomes are common. Set a budget and a time limit before you start. Our guide to how long your money will last on slots works through more examples.
