Wild Toro slot

The Wild Toro slot is ELK Studios' 2016 bullfighting game in which a charging bull wild walks across the reels, creating respins and leaving wilds behind when it meets a matador. It runs on 5 reels and 4 rows with 178 ways, lists a 96.4% RTP and medium–high volatility, and pays up to 2,250x. Here is how the bull, the matadors and the maths work.

Key takeaways

  • The Toro is a walking wild: each move across the reels gives a respin, and knocking out matadors leaves a trail of wilds.
  • Three matadors start the Matador Respin Challenge; the Toro Goes Wild feature is the game's other headline bonus.
  • RTP is 96.4%, so 100 spins at 20p cost about 72p on average over the long run.
  • Max win is 2,250x: £225 at 10p, £4,500 at the £2 limit for 18–24s and £11,250 at £5.
  • ELK's Betting Strategies relied on automated play, which UK rules have banned since October 2021.

What the Wild Toro slot is

ELK Studios was founded in Stockholm in 2013 and holds a Gambling Commission licence (account 40844). Wild Toro, released in 2016, became one of its signature games and the start of a series; ELK's own page notes a Game of the Year award in 2017. The theme is a stylised Spanish bullring, with a bull called Toro and a sneaky matador, Diaz Jr.

Its lasting influence is the walking wild, a mechanic ELK still lists among its signatures. Rather than staying where it lands, the Toro wild moves reel by reel, and each move gives you another spin of the remaining reels. That turns one landing wild into a short chain of linked results.

How the Wild Toro slot machine works

The grid is 5 reels by 4 rows. ELK describes 178 ways to win, also calling them 178 connecting paylines: a fixed set of routes across the grid rather than every possible combination. Matching symbols that follow one of those routes from the left pay according to the paytable.

  1. Choose a stake. It covers all 178 ways.
  2. Spin. The RNG sets every position before the reels move.
  3. Wins along the 178 routes are paid from the paytable.
  4. If the Toro wild is in view, it walks to the next reel and the other reels respin.
  5. Matadors in the Toro's path are knocked out and replaced by wilds.
  6. When the Toro leaves the grid and no feature is active, the sequence ends and, at least 2.5 seconds later, you can spin again.

The Toro walking wild, step by step

When the Toro lands, it doesn't simply act as a wild symbol for one spin. ELK's description says it generates respins as it walks from reel to reel, and when it knocks matadors off the board it leaves a long path of wilds. Those wilds stay for the remaining steps, so a Toro that meets several matadors builds a wall of substitutes.

Worked example at 40p

Suppose the Toro lands on one edge reel and two matadors sit on the next two reels. On its first respin step the Toro charges into the first matador and leaves wilds behind; the reels around it respin and a line of three high symbols connects through the wild path, paying, say, 2x the stake (80p). On the next step it knocks out the second matador, extending the trail, and another respin connects a four-of-a-kind worth 5x (£2). One landing has produced several paid results. Those multiples are illustrative: the paytable shows real values at your stake.

Respins happen automatically as part of one feature sequence. That is allowed under UK rules, which ban autoplay of separate paid spins, not features that run inside a single game cycle.

Wild Toro bonus features: Matador Respin Challenge and Toro Goes Wild

ELK lists two named bonuses. The Matador Respin Challenge starts when three matadors appear. The Toro Goes Wild bonus game is the other headline feature. ELK's page names both but doesn't publish the step-by-step rules, the number of free spins or the trigger odds, and we won't fill those gaps with guesses. The in-game help screen sets out exactly how each one runs on the version you open.

What we can say is how they fit the maths. Features like these hold a large share of the game's return, which is why Wild Toro is rated medium–high volatility: base spins often return less than the stake, and the features are where the bigger results come from. Our page on bonus features explains how studios balance base-game and feature returns.

Wild Toro RTP and volatility

The listed RTP is 96.4%, meaning the game is set to return £96.40 of every £100 staked over millions of spins. Volatility is medium–high: results swing more than a gentle game like Starburst, but less than the extreme games from studios such as Nolimit City. ELK doesn't publish a hit frequency on its game page, so we don't quote one.

Wild Toro: average cost of 100 spins at 96.4% RTP
Stake per spinTotal stakedLong-run average cost
10p£1036p
20p£2072p
50p£50£1.80
£1£100£3.60
£2£200£7.20
£5£500£18

A session will rarely match those averages exactly. With medium–high volatility, finishing 100 spins at 20p with £8 left or £30 in hand are both possible outcomes. Our guide to how long your money will last on slots goes deeper.

Wild Toro max win at UK stakes

The maximum is 2,250 times the stake, which in pounds is:

Wild Toro max win by stake
Stake2,250x maximum
10p£225
20p£450
£1£2,250
£2 (18–24 limit)£4,500
£5 (25+ limit)£11,250

That ceiling is modest compared with many later slots, which reflects a 2016 design built for regular feature activity rather than extreme spikes. Compare others on what slot has the biggest max win.

ELK Betting Strategies and the UK version

ELK's page lists Betting Strategies among Wild Toro's features. These were automated stake plans that changed your bet between spins without you pressing the button each time. Since 31 October 2021, the Gambling Commission's changes to the remote technical standards (opens in a new tab) have banned autoplay on online slots in Great Britain, so a tool that plays spins for you can't be offered here. In any case, no betting plan changes the RTP: varying stakes only changes how much you put at risk.

Other UK rules apply too: a minimum 2.5-second game cycle, no turbo or slam-stop, and stake caps of £5 for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24, set out in the Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab).

Is the Wild Toro slot worth it?

Advantages

  • Walking wild with respins is easy to follow and visually clear.
  • 96.4% RTP is above average for its era.
  • Medium–high volatility is less punishing than extreme games.
  • Made by a UK-licensed studio.

Drawbacks

  • 2,250x cap limits the top end.
  • Feature rules are only fully explained in the help screen.
  • Respin chains can make a session feel longer than it is.
  • Older graphics than ELK's recent titles.

Wild Toro suits adults who like a single well-defined mechanic and don't need a five-figure multiplier ceiling. For more context on picking a game, our how to choose a slot machine guide sets out the trade-offs.

Wild Toro myths and the facts behind them

  • "Matadors on screen mean the Toro is about to appear." Each spin's symbols are drawn independently; matadors don't attract the bull.
  • "Changing stake mid-session resets your luck." There is no luck to reset. See slot machine myths.
  • "A betting strategy can beat the house edge." No staking pattern changes the RTP; read how to win on slot machines for an honest answer.
  • "Two matadors is a near miss." It is a losing result that looks close; see near misses.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Wild Toro RTP?

The Wild Toro RTP is listed as 96.4%. Over millions of spins the game is designed to return £96.40 for every £100 staked, with £3.60 kept as the house edge. That is a long-run average and says little about a single session, where results can differ widely. Some casinos may run a different setting, so check the RTP line in the game's help screen before you play. The RTP explainer explains how the figure is worked out and what it can and can't tell you.

What is the Wild Toro max win?

The Wild Toro max win is 2,250 times your stake. At a 10p stake that is £225; at £1 it is £2,250; at the £2 maximum for players aged 18 to 24 it is £4,500; and at the £5 maximum for players aged 25 and over it is £11,250. That makes it a modest ceiling by modern standards. ELK doesn't publish how often the cap is reached, and it is rare. The max win caps page explains how these limits are set.

How does the walking wild work in Wild Toro?

The Toro is a walking wild that moves from reel to reel, giving a respin of the other reels with each step. According to ELK, when the Toro knocks matadors off the board it leaves a trail of wilds behind, which can join up several winning ways during the sequence. The chain ends when the Toro leaves the grid. All of it counts as part of one paid spin. The walking wilds page explains how this feature works in other slots too.

Does Wild Toro have free spins?

ELK's page mentions free spins as part of Wild Toro's mix of features, alongside the Matador Respin Challenge and the Toro Goes Wild bonus game, but it doesn't publish the trigger or the number of spins. The game's help screen gives the exact rules for the version your casino runs, and it's worth reading before you play. Whatever the rules, a bonus is never due after a run of losing spins. Our page on what triggers a bonus round explains how triggers are decided.

What is the Matador Respin Challenge?

The Matador Respin Challenge is one of Wild Toro's named bonus features, triggered when three matadors appear on the reels, according to ELK Studios. It builds on the game's respin mechanics, with the matador character, Diaz Jr, at its centre. ELK's public page doesn't detail every step, so the help screen inside the game is the place to see exactly what happens and how the round ends. Our respins feature page explains the general idea behind respin bonuses.

Is Wild Toro high volatility?

Wild Toro is rated medium–high volatility. That means results swing more than in calm, low-variance games, but less than in the extreme slots made by some newer studios. In practice you can expect losing stretches, with bigger results arriving through the Toro sequences and the bonus features. Treat your stake as the price of entertainment and set a budget before you start. Our page on medium volatility slot machines helps place it on the scale.

Can I play a Wild Toro demo in the UK?

You can usually play a Wild Toro demo at UK-licensed casinos once you have verified your age. Since May 2019, the Gambling Commission has required operators to confirm players are 18 or over before offering free-to-play games. The demo runs the same maths and features as the paid version, so it's a fair way to see how the walking wild behaves. It cannot predict real-money results. The demo slot age verification page explains the rule.

Can I use Betting Strategies on Wild Toro in the UK?

No, you shouldn't expect ELK's Betting Strategies on Wild Toro in Great Britain. They were automated stake plans that played spins for you, and autoplay has been banned on online slots here since 31 October 2021. Even where they exist, betting strategies only change how much you stake from spin to spin; they cannot change the RTP or beat the house edge. Each spin must be started manually in the UK. Read our page on the autoplay ban for detail.

How much can I bet on Wild Toro in the UK?

The most you can bet on Wild Toro at a UK-licensed casino is £5 per spin if you are 25 or over, or £2 per spin if you are 18 to 24. These limits apply to all online slots and came in on 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025. Casinos apply the right cap based on your verified date of birth, and some set lower limits of their own. See our page on online slot stake limits for the full rules.

Is Wild Toro a fair slot?

Yes, at a UK-licensed casino Wild Toro must run on a tested random number generator and pay out according to its published rules and RTP. ELK Studios itself holds a Gambling Commission licence. Every spin, including each respin in a Toro sequence, is determined by the RNG, so earlier spins don't affect later ones. Fair isn't the same as profitable: the RTP builds in a house edge and most players lose over time. See are slot machines rigged for more.
