Mega symbols in slots are giant versions of normal symbols, from 2×2 up to 4×4 or larger, that occupy several grid cells and count as a matching symbol in each. Despite the name, they have nothing to do with Megaways, Megaclusters or ‘mega win’ banners, which are separate mechanics and labels.
A mega symbol is a scaled-up symbol covering a square or rectangle of cells.
On cluster and grid slots, a giant wild can join several clusters at once.
Megaways, Megaclusters and ‘mega win’ are different things that share the word.
Some giant symbols shrink or break apart after a win, which keeps a feature going over several cascades.
They shift volatility upwards; the published RTP already includes them.

What mega symbols in slots are
A mega symbol is a normal slot symbol drawn at a larger size so that it occupies a block of cells, such as 2×2 or 3×3. Each cell under it behaves as a copy of that symbol. If the giant symbol is a wild, every covered cell is a wild.
The term overlaps with colossal symbols, and studios use giant, jumbo, big and mega almost interchangeably. On this site we use ‘colossal’ for blocks that land across linked reels on traditional reel slots, and ‘mega’ for giant symbols that appear on grid games and often grow, shrink or move as a feature plays out. Both belong in our list of slot machine features.
Mega symbols are not Megaways: clearing up the names
Search for mega symbols in slots and you will find several unrelated mechanics that share the word. They work in completely different ways.

None: it is a celebration banner
On Megaways slots, symbols are drawn taller when fewer of them land on a reel, but each still counts as one symbol, so they are not mega symbols. Megaclusters is a split mechanic, the opposite of a giant symbol. And a mega win is just a banner the game shows above a threshold.
How mega symbols work on a grid
On a cluster or grid slot, a mega symbol is placed by a feature after the random number generator has settled the spin. A typical sequence:
The RNG fills the grid and decides whether the feature that creates the giant symbol is triggered.
The game picks a position for the mega symbol and covers that block of cells.
Clusters or lines are counted, with each covered cell treated as one copy of the giant symbol.
Winning symbols are removed and new ones drop in, if the game uses cascades.
Depending on the rules, the giant symbol stays, shrinks to a smaller size or breaks into single symbols before the next cascade.
The sequence repeats until no new win forms, then the total is paid.
Step 5 is where mega symbols differ most from colossal blocks. A giant wild that breaks down into smaller wilds can feed several cascades in a row, which is how one feature can produce a chain of wins.
Worked example: a 3×3 giant wild on a cluster grid
Take an illustrative 7×7 cluster pays slot where five or more touching symbols win. A 3×3 giant wild lands in the middle, covering nine cells. Around its edge sit three red gems on one side and four blue gems on another.

Without the wild, neither group reaches five and the spin pays nothing. With it, the same nine cells join both clusters, because a wild can belong to more than one cluster at once in most cluster games. That double use is the main source of a giant wild’s value.
The Gargantoon: the best-known mega symbol
Play’n GO’s Reactoonz made the giant wild famous. Its Gargantoon is a 3×3 wild that appears on the 7×7 grid when the game’s charge meter fills, and it breaks down into smaller wilds in later cascades under the game’s rules. Our spec sheet lists Reactoonz at 96.51% RTP, high volatility, cluster pays of five or more and a 4,570× max win.
Reactoonz 2 continues the series on the same 7×7 grid with a 96.2% top RTP and a 5,083× max win. Gigantoonz, also from Play’n GO, takes the giant-symbol idea into its name on an 8×8 cluster grid, with a 96.25% top RTP and a 4,000× max win. Check each help screen for the sizes and rules its giant symbols use.

Mega symbols on payline and ways slots
On a reel slot, a 2×2 mega symbol on reels 1 and 2, rows 1 and 2, puts two matching symbols on each of those reels. On ways slots, that gives 2 × 2 = 4 ways before reel 3 is counted. On a 20-line game, every line passing through rows 1 or 2 on both reels starts with two matching symbols, while lines through row 3 miss it.
Larger blocks follow the same arithmetic. That is why giant symbols can turn an ordinary spin into a wide win, and why their landing frequency is carefully limited in the maths model.
Mega symbols, volatility and what play costs
Giant symbols, especially giant wilds, are expensive features in the maths budget. To keep the RTP on target, the developer makes them rare and trims ordinary wins. The effect is higher volatility: the cost of play is unchanged on average, but results swing more.

Mega win banners and the UK celebration rule
Because ‘mega’ also appears on win banners, it is worth knowing the rule behind them. Since 31 October 2021, online slots in Great Britain must not celebrate a return that is equal to or less than the stake, under the Commission’s responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab). A 40p return on a £1 spin, for example, cannot trigger celebratory sounds or graphics.
So a banner can only appear when you actually won more than you staked on that spin. It still says nothing about your session: a big-win banner after £50 of losing spins can leave you down overall. The balance and net position display shows the real figure; see our page on the net position rule.
Myths about giant and mega symbols
Myth: a charge meter close to full means a giant wild is due. Fact: the next spin’s chance of adding charge is the same as always; the RNG has no memory.
Myth: Megaways slots have mega symbols. Fact: Megaways changes how many symbols each reel shows; the tall symbols are still single symbols.
Myth: mega symbols raise the RTP. Fact: the RTP is fixed before release; features only change how it is delivered.
No. Pub and arcade fruit machines use fixed-size symbols, with features such as nudges and holds doing the work instead. Their prizes are also capped by category: a Category C pub machine allows a £1 maximum stake and a £100 top prize, and is 18+ only. Video-screen machines in casinos and betting shops can show modern features, but their stakes and prizes still follow their category.
UK rules for mega symbol slots
Giant-symbol slots follow the same UK rules as every other online slot: no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop, a minimum 2.5 seconds per spin, a £5 stake limit for players aged 25+ and £2 for 18–24s, and no bonus buy on UK versions. The game’s rules and RTP must be published in the help screen, as required by the Commission’s standard on game rules and likelihood of winning (opens in a new tab). Our guide to slot rules in the UK brings them together.

Frequently asked questions
What are mega symbols in slots?
Mega symbols are giant versions of normal symbols that cover a block of cells, such as 2×2, 3×3 or 4×4. Each covered cell counts as one copy of the symbol, so a giant wild can complete several wins at once. They are most common on grid and cluster slots, where they may shrink or break apart over several cascades. The term overlaps with colossal symbols, and studios use the names loosely.
Is Megaways the same as mega symbols?
No, Megaways is a reel mechanic, not a giant symbol. On a Megaways slot each reel shows a random number of symbols every spin, which changes the number of ways to win. When fewer symbols land, they are drawn taller, but each still counts as one symbol. Mega symbols, by contrast, count as several copies. Our page on Megaways slot machines explains how the variable reels work.
What is the Gargantoon in Reactoonz?
The Gargantoon is a 3×3 giant wild in Play’n GO’s Reactoonz. It appears on the 7×7 grid when the game’s charge meter fills and breaks down into smaller wilds in later cascades, keeping the feature going. Reactoonz is listed at 96.51% RTP with high volatility and a 4,570× max win. Our Reactoonz page explains the full feature set and the maths behind it.
Can one giant wild be part of two wins?
Yes, in most cluster games a wild can belong to more than one cluster at the same time. A 3×3 giant wild touching three red gems and four blue gems can complete both clusters, each counting the nine wild cells. The help screen confirms the rule for each game, and it matters, because double use is where much of a giant wild’s value comes from. See cluster pays slot machines for how clusters are counted.
Do mega symbols improve my chances of winning?
No, they are already included in the game’s RTP, so they do not improve the long-run return. A slot with frequent giant wilds simply pays less elsewhere. Mega symbols change the pattern of results, making them more uneven, rather than the average. Over many spins you should expect to lose roughly the house edge on everything you stake. Our page on the house edge shows how that cost adds up.
What is a mega win in a slot?
A mega win is just a banner the game shows when a single result passes a set multiple of your stake. It is not a feature and does not change the maths. In the UK, games must not celebrate a return equal to or less than your stake, so a banner means that spin paid more than it cost, but your session can still be down overall. Our glossary entry on mega win lists the usual thresholds studios use.
What sizes do mega symbols come in?
The most common sizes are 2×2 and 3×3, with some grid games using 4×4 or larger blocks. Size is set by the game’s rules, and some games change size during a feature, for example shrinking a giant wild after each win. Larger blocks are rarer by design, because they cover more cells. The paytable and help screen list the sizes a game uses. Our paytable guide explains where to find that information.
Are mega symbol slots high volatility?
Usually, yes. Giant symbols, especially giant wilds, create large results when they land in the right place, so the rest of the game is tuned to pay less. The slots in our database built around giant symbols, Reactoonz, Reactoonz 2 and Gigantoonz, are all listed as high volatility. Expect long runs of small or no wins between features. If you want steadier play, read our page on high volatility slot machines before choosing.
How much can I win with mega symbols at UK stake limits?
The limit is the slot’s max win times your stake. Reactoonz caps at 4,570×, which is £22,850 at the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over, or £9,140 at the £2 limit for 18–24s. Reactoonz 2 caps at 5,083×. Those are rare ceilings, not expected outcomes, and most sessions end with less than you started with. Our page on the £2 stake limit for 18–24s explains how the age limit is applied.
Can I try a mega symbol slot without paying?
Many UK casinos offer free demo play, after age verification. Since May 2019, free-to-play versions can only be used once your age is confirmed. A demo uses the same rules and maths as the real game, so it is a good way to see how giant symbols behave before staking money, though demo results do not carry over to real play. Our guide to demo slots explains what to check in a demo.
